Ammonia smell

So last night I went to change LE's diaper (his first ON diaper) which is a BG and he smelled like poop but he didn't poop so I sniffed the diaper and it smelled like ammonia. He had it on for about 6.5 hours. I checked his second diaper this am which he only had on about 4.5 hours, it did not smell.  I went in the pail and sniffed last night's diaper and it did smell as well asa the diapers surrounding it.  Should I treat all the diapers in the pail as if they have ammonia? How do i do this? 

Also, does that mean I need to start soaking his diapers?  

ETA: all the diapers at the bottom of the pail smell like ammonia.

    The urea in pee changes to ammonia when exposed to air and moisture, so it is normal for the diapers in the pail to smell of it. It wouldn't hurt to start soaking the ON diaper inserts just to be safe. In fact, I would try to switch to a natural fiber for ON since they are easier to clean, but that's just my preference. If his skin isn't looking pink when you take the diaper off, you probably don't have build-up yet.

    Diapers that sit will develop ammonia. Basic chemistry. Urine + time = ammonia. It's only an issue if they smell like ammonia immediately after being wet (because that means there's ammonia that didn't wash out being reactivated)

    Oh, ok. guess i never noticed the smell in the pail before.  He does frequently get rashes but i chalked it up to sensitive skin....
