Pediatricians

I know it comes up from time to time "finding a pediatrician"  however  I started thinking about it last night while not sleeping... How soon does the baby go to the pediatrician?  Did you meet with yours before you had the baby?  Are they really the ones that tell you when you can take little one out, and stuff like that?

I think I have one in mind that I would like to use, however him or the office is not aware of that... I just was not sure if I should be doing more on this topic.

Re: Pediatricians

  • It may depend on the hospital but most around me want a chosen pediatrician on admission to the hospital. If you've picked one I don't think they really need to know, but you want to just make sure they are accepting new patients. The office receptionist should be able to tell you that. A pediatrician will see your baby in the hospital (if your pediatrician comes to the hospital it may be them or someone from the group) or someone from the hospital. Once discharged from the hospital, you will probably be scheduled to be seen by pediatrician within the week. At least that is my experience

  • We finally got one last week. They are all different (at least who we called). Some will do a meet and greet while you are pregnant.  The one we ultimately chose wants us to call from the hospital once we have our discharge papers.  Unsure when the first appointment will be.  The class at the hospital said some will be day 5.  I guess it all depends.

  • So what happens if my hospital is an hour away from my house and my pediatrician is local? Will they still come to the hospital?

  • I am delivering about 40 minutes away and my pediatrician will not be coming to the hospital. We will be bringing him in for his first doctor's appointment about 24 - 48 hours after discharge from the hospital.

I had a meet and greet with the pediatrician earlier this month and got everything set up with them so it's one less thing I need to think about once he is here.

  • I have my meet and greet on Oct. 3rd. The office was recommended to me my numerous friends. I'm pretty sure they will be sending someone from the practice to the hospital but that's something I will ask the day of. The office is only about 15-20 minutes from where I'm delivering.

  • I could not be more happy that I asked this question!! Wow I would have been like a deer in headlights when they started asking me these things! I have found 4 in my area that take my insurance and have very good ratings.. I suppose I need to start calling and finding out which one I will be choosing for sure.. The one I choose before was further fromh house so I took to google.

  • @danigirl830 I'm delivering at St. Charles in Port Jeff. The visiting hours aren't great...very small windows. And the baby stays in nursery during visiting hours. But honestly, I've told everyone that I don't really want visitors at the hospital. I'd much rather them come see me when I'm home. I want to rest as much as possible while I have the help I need there.

  • @LongIslandMama1114‌ Yes definitely! My friend just had her baby there 2 months ago, she liked it a lot. I'm delivering at Stony Brook, my LC is a L&D nurse there and she says they leave the baby in the room with you 99% of the time, which I love but if I have a c-section that's going to be a little more tiring.
Yes, it's definitely all a matter of opinion, I suppose. I know that I will be responsible for this LO every second once we're released so I am going to take advantage of all the help I can get when I'm in the hospital. A friend of mine is due in October and she was adamant about delivering at Stony Brook...to the point she changed doctors because her prior doctor delivered at St. Charles.

  • We need a pediatrician before we can register at the hospital. I selected two pediatricians to interview and one actually declined to consider me because he has already accepted too many babies due around the same time. So I found a third and interviewed one of my choices this morning. Some charge a copay for the meet and greet, but most don't; some do groups, others individually.

The pediatrician we met today (and will probably choose) does not have privileges at our hospital (pretty common in a city where there are several big hospitals) so we'll use a hospital pediatrician for the first 48 hours (which they said is better anyway because they spend so much time with newborns). Then once we are discharged our doc will actually come to our house to see the baby within 48 hours (soo convenient).

The doc will also give us her cell phone so we could can her with questions while in the hospital, for instance if we aren't sure about a test the hospital's pediatrician is recommending.
    It's a girl! Due November 22, 2014
  • I chose mine at the hospital after I had my son. I figured that if they weren't great, I would choose one of the other three at the clinic by my house, but she was great. I didn't prepare for that as much as most do or I should have, but I also didn't expect to havethe baby when I did, either.
  • DS was born 4/29. His first pedi appt was 5/3. We didn't research/meet with any pedis, we let our insurance find one.

We love our pedi, and dd will go to him as well :)

  • With my first DD I wasn't aware of all the "to dos". We ended up using the "in house" pediatrician and then switched her to our family practice after her first or second office visit. This time we have switched back to a pediatrician for both DD1 and baby, and since they are affiliated with our hospital we will get to also see them Inpt at delivery.

@danigirl830... not sure if you saw on another thread that I tagged you in but I'll be delivering at Stony Brook as well.  Did you or are you going on a tour?  I know I'm a little ahead of you so I can PM you my experience there if you like...
@LongIslandMomma1114 One of the reasons I changed my OB as well is because they said they were affiliated with Stony Brook and St. Charles but when they gave my pre-admission forms it was only for St. Charles...they didn't deliver at SB.  Don't know why they said they did..there were a lot of other reasons for changing though.  St. Charles is a good hopsital but we are so much closer to Stony Brook and a lot easier to get to.

  • @Autumnsnow Totally understandable. I had actually just switched to this OB/GYN office in Sept or Oct of last year. I was with my other gyno for 13 years but she was affiliated with Peconic Bay in Riverhead and her offices were in Riverhead and Wading River. Though I work in Riverhead, going to appointments became a pain plus a few other things started bothering me about her so I switched. I didn't really have any allegiance to this office but I liked them and honestly I wanted to deliver at St. Charles because it's smaller. It's also a little more convenient for me, too.

PS...I think it's neat that we have a few of us Long Island mamas on here :)

    Me too :)

My DH works out in WestHampton so that's where all his doc's are too which can really be a pain as well, especially since one two of his meds go to a mom & pop pharmacy out there.  So when he's off he has to go out there to just to pick them up.  Guess it's a double edge sword cuz it's convienent to go before work

  • We just secured ours last week. Our selection was based on recommendations from our OB as well as friends in the area.

San Francisco is pretty competitive (not a lot of kids here) so I was relieved to have found a good one and have LO officially set. They will also do the first appointment while we're at the hospital.

@autumnsnow I saw that, I totally thought I responded, sorry! lol I haven't gone on a tour yet, but would like too. How did you set it up, just calling the hospital? I just went to the baby basics class at BRU in Bohemia and the instructor happened to be a L&D nurse at Stony Brook so I asked her a lot. Yes please PM any experience you've had there!! Thank you!!
@danigirl830.. you totally might have and I might have missed it..I'm really only on at work and when I'm at home usually on my laptop but my dog decided on thurs to spill my cup of coffee into it while we were at work.. it be fried....
Yes I called up the hospital and said that I needed to make an appt for the Labor & Development Hospital tour.  It was really easy and if you filled out your preadmission forms they should have you in the system.  Just to let you know they are Sat/Sun's and start at 5.  She told me they are from 5-6 but the forms they send you say the tour is a half hour so we'll see.
We were going to take the classes given at Bohemia but we didn't.  Did you find it helpful?  I wonder if it's too late to register.  By the way lately we pretty much live in that one haha

ETA: Oh and yes I will totally PM you when I have LO :)

  • Our LO won't see the pediatrician until her 2 month check up. My MW does well baby checks until then.

If we were having baby at the hospital, our pedi would check baby our while still in the hospital and then again at 3 days old, 2 weeks old then 2 months.

  • @Autumnsnow‌ oh I totally understand that, I spilled water all over my DH laptop a few months ago, so now we're just down to my iPad.
Yes, we live in the Bohemia one too. I just feel like the Lake Grove one doesn't have everything. The class was good, I'd say my DH learned more then I did. I pretty much knew or read everything she said. The instructor was very nice though, I might take her breastfeeeing class but I'm afraid it will all be the same info and that one you pay $35 for each person. Our OB's office offers them so I might just do that.
Thanks for the info, I'll be calling the hospital this week! Btw when are you due?!
Yeah Lake Grove and the Holbrook one aren't great...especially Holbrook.
No problem for the info :) Just a side note we're going to go to the tour on 10/11.   I'm due 11/19 and don't think they'll let me go too much later because of the GD.

  • We are required to have one ahead of time. Interviewed a month ago.
Our ped sees them within 24hrs of birth then again 5days later. Then two weeks later. I needed to tell the hospital who he was when I did the registration paperwork.

    Things to look for
Make sure you like the nurses!!! You'll be talking to them a lot and they will get you in for appts
Office hrs that work for you
    Weekend hrs
Access to dr directly, phone email etc
    Sick and wellness rooms
    Vaccination philosophy
    Parking- validate, pay or free
    For me twin stroller access:)
Also make sure they have privileges at the hospital your kid(s) would be at if there ever was a problem
  • We got a list of pediatricians from my OB and interviewed a few of them. We know which one we're going with, but we're going to officially select the practice once I'm admitted into the hospital. If I remember correctly, they have a pediatrician on call that will visit the baby and I within my 48 hours stay at the hospital, in their office a few days after birth and then every other month for check-ups and vaccinations.
