Would you do this with your child?

Kate has been asking to go on an airplane lately. We still haven't taken her, but we were randomly talking while on a walk the other day and she said she wanted to touch the clouds. I told her the only way to do that was by going up in an airplane. Now she asks to all the time. Coincidentally, my boss just asked me yesterday if I would like to bring Kate on his private plane (he has his pilot's license) and fly to lunch an hours-ish flight away and then fly back. First, I don't love flying commercially, but would be very nervous on a small, private plane with a pilot who just does this as a hobby, and second, I get horrible motion sickness. But I don't want to let my fears get in the way of Kate having cool opportunities. I am very close to my boss, I have worked for him for many years, he came to see us in the hospital the day after Kate was born so I'm not too concerned about her freaking out on the plane if she does. Would you go?

Re: Would you do this with your child?

  • i personally wouldn't, but maybe i'm paranoid. i just hear about too many small plane crashes. if there's only one pilot, your life is totally in his hands and there is no backup if something were to happen to him.

could you make a weekend trip of going somewhere on a commercial "commuter" flight? something that would be 30 minutes to an hour and would be relatively inexpensive?

  • @vvvvvfee‌ I'm with you on the fear of small plane crashes. There's always one going down over a lake here (we're in Michigan-they're always flying over one of the Great Lakes.) We are flying with her next year, commercially, so maybe she'll just have to wait until then.
  • maybe you could take her up to the top of a big skyscraper that has an observation deck?
  • If it were me, I wouldn't do it. I get motion sickness too - very easily -- so I know I wouldn't enjoy it. I rode on a small prop plane once and it was super loud and very turbulent (at one point I started praying the Hail Mary bc that is how nervous I was and I am not one to just start praying like that!). Maybe buy her a kid's book about airplanes?

If you do decide to do it, let us know how it goes!
  • @Jeffreysmom24‌ the book is a great idea. Even if I decide against the plane ride, it will get her more prepared (hopefully) for our vacation plane trip.
  • What kind of private plane are we talking about? Like the kind celebs have(separate cockpit with seats in the back and room to move around)or the kind that you have to wear the head phone things to hear each other? As you can tell I know a lot about planes. Haha!
If it's the 2nd kind I probably wouldn't. Aren't those loud? Maybe wait until she's a little older.
My LO loves the planes too. But we live in a great area for visiting planes. We live close to Dulles. And her class at Gymboree is really close, we can see the landing gear as the jets are flying right over us.

  • @SJandVA‌ good point. Not the celeb kind, it's small with no separate cock pit. I don't know if it's loud and headphones are required, but that's just another reason to add to my "don't go" list. I have used my motion sickness excuse every other time to get out of going, so I will probably use that one again.
  • I would be nervous and apprehensive (and I fly all the time - Evie has flown a few times with me,) but I would reassure myself that it's highly unlikely there would be a problem. HIGHLY unlikely. You drive with her on the road, eh? That's far more dangerous.

30 minutes in the air is probably quite reasonable. Plus, that's a pretty generous offer. On a nice clear day, staying local, it is very, very, very unlikely, VERY unlikely, there would be an accident. I say do it. I would do it with Evie.

  • Man, that sounds awesome! But, i kind've agree about the small plane thing.  I don't think I'd be comfortable doing that.  Too many of them going down for my liking.
