Ah, shit

So I'm in a wedding this coming Sunday. I picked up the dress back in July, tried it on, everything was cool. Pulled it out now to get it pressed and tried it on. It does not fit. It is a one strap dress and is too loose around the rib cage by several inches.

I am leaving town beginning thurs morning so I don't think I have time to get it altered. I tried it on with a padded bra and it helped a little, so worst case scenario maybe I'll just get a big strapless bra. Aah!

Anyone have any cheats/ handy fixes to make a dress a little smaller?

  • Do you have a dry cleaner? My dry cleaner does alterations, and really well, and they only take a couple days.

  • Ditto to calling the dry cleaner in the morning. Explain the situation and they will find you someone who can fix it fast. It might not be perfect, but it's an easier problem to fix than it not fitting the other way!

  • Ok, I'm going to try the dry cleaning route. One more dumb question. Do I pin it to show much I want taken in? Or just tell them "take it in two inches"? The only thing I've ever had altered was my wedding gown and of course that was pretty involved.

  • I actually used to own a bridal shop. Do you have a pic of the dress? The amount of time a dress needs to be altered depends on the construction of the gown. Some can be brought in by the side seams but some need the zipper moved. Also you can typically only bring a dress in 2 dress sizes (or roughly 4 inches) without having to reconstruct the dress.

Most bridal shops need more then a week for alterations especially during the busy season (which we are in). I agree that a dry cleaner may be your best bet but you can always check with the shop you bought the gown from.

  • Also if you can't get it altered and the bra helped consider wearing one of these instead. It should help and you can pin the dress to the bra in multiple places to get it to stay on better.
