Not baby related, need new books....

Though I am not what I would call a bookworm I do love to read before bed. I've read the 50 shades trilogy too many times and am in need of new books. I enjoy suspense, mystery and lots of good plots. Any of you ladies read anything good lately? If so please do share! I need some suggestions.

Thanks :)

I don't know many books that are mystery and that I would recommend to someone into 50 shades? A lot of people liked Gone Girl but it was too chick lit and poorly written to me. It did have some good suspense though. Great plot lines I've recently enjoyed Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy, And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Housseini, and Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. These aren't suspenseful or mysteries though.

I did just finish The Dinner by Koch, it was suspenseful and a fast read that kept me engaged but in the end my hatred for the characters left me with a bad taste in my mouth. A lot of people compare it to Gone Girl, not that I see that comparison, but you might like it for the suspense.

    Bump burp.
  • The Cuckoo's Calling and The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling).

  • I just finished War Brides it's set in England during WWII and I loved it. It's a bit of a mystery. I love the Outlander series that just got made into a TV show on Starz. Also I read Wild by Cheryl Strayed and it's one of my favorite books I've read this year. I should add that I hated the 50 Shades books and didn't get through the whole series. So maybe we don't have the same taste in books. Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides, and Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett are my two favorite books.

  • I was more into the twists of the 59 shades. The sex was overdone and made too easy, the kinky erotica, just not my style and it was repetitive, BUT, when there was a twist I was left wanting to read til I found the end of it :) i will read most anything but a love struck romantic book. Thanks gals I've made a list in my ipad to start sorting thru!!

  • @FrecklesInside‌ have you read The Road by Cormac McCarthy?
    It's a good one too.
I really liked And the Mountains echoed. Did you ever read The Kite Runner?
Maybe we have the same taste in books.

Atonement has a crazy amount of twists. I randomly found it on a bookshelf in the volunteer group house I was staying in when I was in Ghana in 2007 and had several times where was I was like 'WHAT THE FUCK'

  • This is great! I have been looking for a new book to bring to my 3 hr glucose test on Tuesday.

  • The Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Buy them. Read them. Love them. I'm spending the summer rereading the J. D. Robb In Death series and remembering why I love them so much :)
  • I love Lisa Gardner's DD Warren series for mystery.

  • If you liked 50 shades, you'll adore Tiffany Reisz. She's incredible and writes super sexy BDSM. The first in the 4 is called The Siren.
  • JD Robb's series In Death
  • @thejucheidea‌ I LOVED Atonement. It's one of my favorite books and it was reading that book that made me love the name Cecilia for a girl.

Ditto on The Kite Runner and A Prayer for Owen Meany though John Irving can be long winded and he takes a while to get where he is going so you have to have some patience to see the beauty in Owen Meany. It's honestly one of the most well choreographed modern stories in my opinion.

I have recently fallen in love with the Australian author Liane Moriarty. My favorite book of hers was The Husband's Secret. I have recently read all of her books and love them.

Right now I am reading a book by Katie Crouch called Abroad. It seems to be a fictional account, loosely based on the Amanda Knox story. It's not the best book over but is holding my interest well enough to keep me up later than I should be.

Hmmm... What else? I've been reading a lot lately since I read in bed and often have trouble falling asleep with the nausea. I'll look at my kindle and see what else I have read recently.
  • @jessuhmarie‌ I also read If I Stay. You enjoyed the second book? I can't decide if I want to read if bc usually I don't like young adult fiction but that book was good and hit close to home bc when my friend passed away unexpectedly she was in a coma for a week or so. Reading that book felt therapeutic in a strange way.
  • Thanks ladies! I'm so glad I asked you all! I have such a good reading list started now!!

  • I third the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon...and you might also like the Dublin Murder Squad series by Tana French...
  • I haven't read for a while... But here are my all time faves/memorable stories:

    Historical Fiction:
The Other Boleyn Girl - Phillipa Gregory
the Virgin's Lover - Phillipa Gregory
Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follet
Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden

    Mystery/Suspense
Anything Dan Brown (eg The da Vinci Code)
Anything Kathy Reich (TV series Bones is based on her stories)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (and tsequels) - Steig Larsson

    Fantasy
    Harry Potter
    Game of Thrones

    General Fiction
Anything Amy Tan (her books are about Chinese American mother/daughter relationships - my fave is The Kitchen God's Wife - read it 3 times)

  • Have you read anything by Jodi Piccoult? A lot of her books have twists in them and they're great reads.

  • I loved Gone Girl.

Also I have seen people mention Pillars of the Earth. That is an amazing book!!!

  • I read Mr. Mercedes a while back (Stephen King). Gone Girl is a great read.

  • Some of my favorite mystery/spy/thriller type authors are John le Carre, Dick Francis, and Nelson Demille.  Not necessarily the most "trendy" guys (ok, one of them might be dead now) but I have always liked most of their books!

I love Ken Follett, Pillars of the Earth was amazing and World Without End was good too!  I like the Philippa Gregory historical fiction books too; they tend to be a little romance-y but I don't mind that if I'm in the mood.  Anything that David Sedaris writes cracks me up and I love it.

Specific books that I have read recently and enjoyed are: The Glass Castle, A Reliable Wife, The Light Between Oceans, In the Time of the Butterflies, Rules of Civility, and In One Person.

I am getting ready to read Gone Girl because I never did and I'd like to read it before I see the movie.  I also have Defending Jacob and What Alice Forgot on my Amazon wishlist.

    My Chart

    BabyFetus Ticker
  • Not suspense, but enjoyable

World War Z, chapter's are vignettes of people involved in a Zombie apocalypse type event--not the Brad Pitt movie :)
The Hollows (Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison) Witches Vamps Magic etc
October Daye novels, Seanan McGuire, Fairy and Magic
The Girl with All the Gifts
Jennifer Estep's The Spider series, magical assassin chick
Meredith Gentry series by Laurell K. Hamilton
    Dresden FIles Magical Detective?
Dirty Job by Christoper Moore, Humorous writer who has a few books out.

I have about 500 books on my kindle atm... I might have a problem and that might be why I trend towards prolific writers :)

I tend to prefer lighter fare with a good story that either makes me laugh or keeps me turning the page to find out more.

  • I like the The White Queen, The Red Queen and The White Princess. I'm reading the King's Curse right now. These are all part of the Phillipa Gregory Cousins War series. Bonus--there's a good show on Starz that combines all of these.

If you like historical fiction, I also highly recommend Lily of the Nile, Song of the Nile and Daughters of the Nile by Stephanie Dray. I blew through all of these in a couple weekends.

If you're more a 50 Shades kind of girl, I think you'd really like Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover.
