Pregnant after a Loss

Question (TTCAL)

Hello everyone and Congratulations to you! I have a question...if you miscarried, what was your next cycle like? I have been doing OPKs since CD 10 to make sure I would catch my O day for bloodwork testing, and my lines are getting lighter and lighter (or I guess I should say there's more and more contrast between the control and test lines). I guess my question is, did any of you ovulate super early after a miscarriage and conceive that first cycle? Thank you in advance! :)

    I'm sorry for your loss.
The first few cycles following a miscarriage are wonky at best. Your body needs time to recover and heal. In some cases, you may never go back to what was normal before your loss. There might be a new normal for your body and it might take time to learn and understand.

To answer your specific question, yes. Prior to my losses I always O'd at CD 14-15. After, it would fluctuate anywhere from CD 10 - 17. That was my new normal. Good luck to you and be patient with yourself.

As to the second part of your question, yes. I conceived once on the cycle right after a miscarriage and I lost that pregnancy. Ask your doctor how many cycles you should wait until ttc again and follow those orders.

  • My cycles actually stayed the same after my losses with the exception of my first period taking about 5 weeks to first appear. Those cycles can be unpredictable though. I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope your cycle gets back to normal.

  • I continued to have 28-29 day cycles after my loss, but instead of ovulating around day 12-13, I ovulated consistently around 15-16. This pregnancy was on a day 17 ovulation.
I'm sorry for your loss and hope that your cycles are back to your new normal soon!

  • I'm sorry for your loss. Every loss is different. With my first I went on to have a normal cycle. I O'd at my normal time and it was a normal length cycle for me. It took four months to get pregnant again. With my second I ended up with retained tissue and didn't get AF for four months. I had to have a D&C to resolve it which got me back on track. My cycle went back to normal after that and it took 6 more months to get pregnant again.

  • Counting my D&C as CD1, I ovulated on day 25 that first cycle, got AF 12 DPO. The next cycle I ovulated on CD17 and got a BFP 12 DPO. I am only 6w6d so I'm still in the hoping & praying stage of pregnancy (which I think lasts about 40 weeks ;))

  • I'm very sorry for your loss. For both of my miscarriages my HCG got down near zero, then I ovulated, then two weeks later AF came and my cycles were relatively normal thereafter. I have never conceived the same month as a miscarriage, but I'm pretty sure natural conception is impossible for me.

I have heard that OPKs are really unreliable after a miscarriage, so I would try a secondary method to track cycles for now. Do you temp?

OPKs are only unreliable if your HCG has not reached 0. Once you're at 0 they are just as reliable as any other cycle. I agree, though, temping plus OKPs will give you a more accurate reading than just OPKs alone.

  • Every cycle (and a few after) I've ever had after a MC or birth has been the craziest thing I've ever seen in my life.

  • Very sorry for your loss.  PP have covered the ovulation dates, but I wanted to stress uneek's point that you shouldn't be trying to conceive the cycle after a M/C unless your doctor has specifically told you that you can.  The only thing worse than a loss is back to back losses because you don't give your body the proper time time to heal.

  • Thank you all for your input! We are definitely not trying to conceive this cycle, which is why I'm nervous that I O'd earlier. I have been continuing the OPKs and I think I'll be ovulating within the next day or two which would be around CD 16 or 17 like a lot of you said. Unfortunately, temping isn't an option for me lately since my 3 year old has been having nightmares and my sleep schedule is off. I had a missed miscarriage back in April as well so I am a bit more reluctant to try again. I will be getting some bloodwork done a week after I (hopefully) ovulate to get some answers. Again, I appreciate your time and best of luck to all of you!

  • I usually ovulate cd 16 and have 30 day cycles. The cycle of my d&c I did not ovulate, and my period did not start until cd 33. The next cycle I didn't ovulate until cd 18, but got a bfp 13 days later. I'm now 39 weeks exactly!
  • I didn't chart prior to my 1st loss, but my cycles always seemed to be 27-29 days. After 1st loss (MMC, D&C), I started using OPKs and charting, and I felt I may not have ovulated that 1st cycle. I don't think I ovulated 1st cycle after my 2nd loss (EP, salpingectomy and D&C) either, and I didn't bother trying to track O 1st cycle after loss #3 (natural MC). After each loss, my cycles seemed to resemble what my old normal was, I tend to O around CD 12-14, and my cycles have varied from 27-30 days.

But everyone is different and best thing to do is charting as best you can-OPKs, monitoring CM and try to get into a routine for temping, and hopefully you will see a pattern!

    Good luck to you!

  • After my first miscarriage (11w0d), I didn't ovulate for two cycles. It drove me absolutely crazy playing that waiting game. Following my second miscarriage (5w3d) I ovulated shortly after normal... Around cycle day 18/19 if I remember correctly.

  • I did not ovulate until about 6 months after my blighted ovum. My cycles were erratic (30-88) days and I got pregnant on my first ovulation (it was on CD 30 by the way). I seem to be a rare case, but OPKs were not accurate because my LH was elevated after my MC, nearly every OPK I ever took was positive.

Good luck to you, I hope things go back to normal a bit more quickly.
