Cloth Diapering

Ladies-I'm so frustrated :( rash and detergent question (long...)

So dd has been out of cd for a little over 2 weeks due to a horrid strain of HFM that peeled the skin from her bum and the cream we needed to use was not cd friendly.

I had been having some stink issues despite hot water strips and bleach, so I tried bac out. The diapers smelled cleaner then ever and I thought the problem was solved. Last night we started in cd again and she woke up red all over her diaper area and it got worse during the day. So back in sposies....

Dd reacted to tide also. Does tide have enzymes?

I am washing with All f&c small and mighty, but I'm just going to use All F&C, as that is what we use regularly. I've tried Allen's and Nellies with not a ton of success.

Dd is 18 months, and diapers are 4 months old, so I'd like for these diapers to last her and baby #2 who will be here in March. Is the All going to ruin my diapers, or will they just need to be stripped more often?

Re: Ladies-I'm so frustrated :( rash and detergent question (long...)

  • I've heard of bac out causing rashes/redness if not rinsed out all the way.

Sorry-I should have added that I rinsed 3 times after :( I would hope it doesn't need more than that!?!

  • Yes Tide has enzymes. And Bac out has enzymes too. Do you think your LO could be sensitive to them?
  • I not anti mainstream detergent, although manufacturers have said the residues can harm the diapers. But please don't use all free and clear. If there's one detergent that causes more trouble than any other it's either all free and clear or rocking green.

  • @Rrrrrachel‌ Do you have any other suggestions? I was thinking All F&C because I know she can tolerate it and it seems to clean the diapers.....

I really want cd to work, but I'm getting so sick of laundry issues! (I know I'm being whiny....exhausted pregnant lady here! Sorry :) )

  • Is it possible that her little bottom is still more sensitive after the HFM? Meaning it's reacting to things it would not have reacted to prior and maybe will stop reacting to with a little more time.......What kind of diapers are you using?

  • @PipSqueak0313‌ her lil tush is all healed now and her skin was looking great. I suspect the bac out as that was the only thing that has changed in her cd stash since her two week 'break'. For sposies we are using Honest Co. My cd stash is all 4.0s with natural fiber inserts and a cover with natural inserts.

  • The Pinstripes and Polkadots detergent list is a good place to start, especially if there are ingredients you are trying to avoid.

What didn't you like about the Allen's and Nellie's? Do you have hard water? What is your wash routine? Maybe your wash routine just needs a bit of adjustment.

I'm a charlies fan girl the initial itching is probably because the old residues getting shaken up and removed. It's supposed to be great with sensitive skin. Is the one exception to the liquid rule ( I use the liquid) but if your water is at all hard you for sure need a softener. I use charlies booster.

  • @freezorburn‌

I soak ON inserts before washing
    Wash:
Quick wash warm with extra rinse and extra agitation (no detergent)
Regular wash on hot with extra rinse and extra agitation (1/2 way to line 1 with All S&M F&C)

I have an HE FL washer. We have hard water, but we have a softening system. No ammonia stink since I got rid of MF. Diapers aren't really barnyard bad, but they smell more than they should when wet.

Allen's just didn't seem effective. I was afraid to add more, since they make a big deal about only using 1/2 tablespoon (or around there for HE). The diapers looked clean, they just didn't smell clean out of the wash.

Nellies was better than Allen's but the same smell issue happened, it just took longer. I wash using a heaping scoop of Nellies.

    I'll give Charlie's a try.

Do they sell it anywhere in big stores like Walmart, target, lowes, or Walgreens? Or is Amazon easiest?

I really appreciate all the input and advice ladies!

  • I get Charlie's at whole foods or the local food coop but they also sell it at the lowes grocery near me which is a regular grocery store. Be sure to follow the directions on cleaning your machine and then read about how detergent residue will come out of your clothes. Switching is kind of a pain but I have to say to me it was totally worth it.

  • @Rrrrrachel‌ thanks! I can get to a whole foods!

So, if I switch to Charlie's for cd, do we have to use it for all our other laundry too? (That's sort of what it sounds like...)

  • I feel like we've had more than a few people post on here that they have had unsatisfactory cleaning results using a CD-safe detergent with a whole-house water softener. I'm starting to wonder if, while those softeners are probably good for most household purposes, maybe they aren't optimal for CD laundry? There's the whole precipitating vs. non-precipitating thing, and I'm not sure which you get when you have water softening machine. As opposed to the Calgon that one would add on top of your laundry detergent.
