Intro and 1st Question

Hello, ladies! I've been a lurker on "my" BMB (Sept14) since getting pregnant, but I've been hesitant to post because I wasn't sure how active a participant I could be (and didn't want to seem selfish). Now that I've been on maternity leave for a while, I'm finding myself on here more often, so it seems like the right time to jump in. A huge thank you in advance for all the advice and recommendations I've seen on these forums thus far. So helpful! In fact, I just went and bought an RNP today based on the rave reviews, and I couldn't be happier. LO loves it already.

A little about me - I've been married for just over two years, and last summer DH and I decided to try and expand our family (he's older and has given me SD1, SS1, and SS2 from his previous marriage). After struggling with Stage III endometriosis for 10 years, we were unsure if I could conceive, however, we were blessed with a BFP just before Christmas. After a rough start (an SCH and severe MS), DD arrived on August 20th (2 weeks early and on my birthday!). She's a beauty and we're completely in love.

We seem to have gotten the hang of BFing, and I just started pumping this week as I'll be returning to work soon, but my question is, why is it recommended to freeze your milk pumped on Fridays to give to DC for the following Monday? If the storage guidelines say your milk will keep in the refrigerator for 3-8 days, is freezing really necessary over the weekend?

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to getting to know you all better!

  • No real advice since I'm a SAHM but just wanted to say congrats on your baby girl!

  • Thank you, ladies! That makes complete sense. Guess I better get started on my stash!

I don't know why, maybe someone else here does, but my milk went bad after 18-24 hours if I didn't freeze it. I didn't end up going back to work so I never needed it but when I tried pumping and started a freezer stash ( intending to go back to work) that was what I discovered.

  • Welcome! Since your LO is a month old, it's a good time to begin pumping. You'll want to start introducing the bottle around now too, so that you know LO will be comfortable with a bottle (and which brand works for her) when you go back to work. Depending on how much you get pumping, you can have DH give a bottle and then freeze the rest. You'll want to have at least one days worth of milk frozen so you can send that the first day back. However, most women will try to build up a bigger freezer stash. Almost all working moms will have a day or two that they forget to put the milk in the fridge when they get home, or the milk spills in the container (that's what happened to me) over the months you're pumping, so you'll want to have extra in your freezer. Like PPs said, to keep the frozen from going bad, it's good to rotate it out. Don't forget to date them when you put them in the freezer. Glad you joined us!
