Food aversions during pregnancy - can you eat them now?

While I was on Pinterest looking for recipes this morning, something occurred to me.  I am amazed how strong some of my food aversions during pregnancy were and continue today.  With DD1, I pretty much could not eat any meat protein during the 1st trimester, but especially seafood.  I LOVED salmon prior to pregnancy, but it took me a good 4 or 5 years after I gave birth to be able to stomach the idea of it.  With DD2, it was and continues to be quinoa.  I see lots of recipes that incorporate it and I know it is good for me, but the thought of it still makes me queasy.  So, how long did it take for yours to go away?  Are there still things you can't eat?

  • Mine changed throughout pregnancy. Early pregnancy I did not want any carbs, late pregnancy that was all I wanted. My heartburn led to me not wanting onions and I'm just now eating them more at just over a year later.

I also have certain songs and even shoes that make me feel sick because I associate them with early pregnancy.

  • My only food aversion was coffee and that happened with all 3. It went away as soon as I delivered. All three were born in the evening and the next morning I had the most delicious cup of coffee ever.
OMG, I would have DIED if I couldn't drink coffee during pregnancy.

It was horrific! I'm a big coffee drinker and suddenly the smell alone made me nauseous! The first week without in each pregnancy I was seriously a heap on the couch with an awful withdrawal headache. In fact, with Drew I didn't think I was/could be pregnant so I didn't test until I took a sip of coffee one morning and got nauseous from it!

That said, I can't complain really. I had the coffee aversion, which was awful, but in three pregnancies the single time I threw up was when I got a stomach bug at 8 months with my first. I'll take a coffee aversion over morning sickness any day!

  • There are no foods that I cannot eat today due to pregnancy food aversions. With DD I couldn't eat or smell any meats (even seafood and I love it) without feeling nauseous. With DS I craved meat, even red meat and I didn't even eat red meat! I still like steak.

I have, however, had a similar experience with foods I ate before a bad illness, unrelated to pregnancy. It took about 20 years before I could eat asparagus again because I got horribly sick soon after eating it when I was young. I also had a similar experience with croissants.

  • I never had any food adversions with DS. However, I thought I would rush back to drinking my wine/cocktails but I really didn't have a drink for months afterwards.

  • With both kids, I didn't want to eat sweets in the first trimester. That changed pretty fast and could eat sweets during the rest of the pregnancy. Coffee made me nauseous during first trimester. I drink it now again just fine. It was pretty fast post pregnancy that I drank it again.

  • My main aversion was feta cheese - if I even smelled it in the kitchen I had to run into another room. I can eat it again, but if the smell is strong it still turns me off.

Other mild aversions were coffee and chocolate, but I'm back to drinking/eating both of those with a vengeance like the good old days!

  • Around my 2nd trimester I gagged just looking at steak. A few weeks before DD was born all I wanted was a big fat steak. That ended up being our "New Parents Dinner" at the hospital and surprisingly, it was delish. I was fine after that.
  • Eggs. I couldn't handle the smell of them cooking, or the taste, or the texture. Now I can't stand the smell if I'm hungover, but I tolerated them fine right after I gave birth.
  • I think they all went away as soon as I wasn't pregnant anymore!

  • It was pork chops with DS. I just ate them for the first time again last week.

I had none with DS, and tons with DD that are still going (6 months post partum). I hate the smell of lavender (had to throw out the dish soap we were using during first tri) red wine (sob!) and this delicious pho soup that was pretty much all I could eat during the first tri. I'm also weird about eggs, yogurt and shrimp, but I can eat them if I don't think about it too much. It's crazy how strong some aversions still are!

I could only eat pho for the first 8-10 weeks of my pregnancy (veggie only because meat made me gag). I ate it so much that I ended up developing am aversion to it. It still makes me gag :(

  • With DD3, any sweets made me so sick.  Like 1-2 bites of a cookie and I would be headed for the bathroom.  I have no problem with sweets now.   :x
  • Normally my two favorite things are coffee and chocolate. Had no desire to touch either, esp. during the first tri. Thankfully, the love came back. :)

I remember the smell of leftover meatloaf always making me gag when pregnant, and that's lingered.....can't eat meatloaf sandwiches anymore.

Also, there was one night I was eating dinner at my parents, was feeling queasy and having some texture issues w/ the scallops they had served. At the same time my dad was telling stories about how terribly his mother used to prepare fish and how disgusting it was.....when he started talking about how she cooked it in milk I blurted out "Can we please stop talking about bad fish??" and everyone laughed at me. :P I have no desire to eat scallops anytime soon again, though those were never my favorite anyway.

  • Shrimp in things like soup/stew...still can't really eat it.

Beef. Especially Microwaved beef. Like heated up leftovers. Gag. Still smells like dogfood.
    Microwaved beef sounds so gross.....

It was beef for me too. And onions and bell peppers. I can eat the onions and bell peppers now, but I can't stand to smell the onion if it's a really strong smelling purple one. Beef I don't really eat anymore, except I will eat it if it's in a sauce like spaghetti or in lasagna or something. I can't do steak, and I used to eat it at least once a week before I got pregnant.

  • With DD it was extra virgin olive oil. I couldn't stand anything that was cooked in it. It went away right after I gave birth. With DS it was shellfish. I am now starting to be able to eat shrimp again.. Sometimes.

  • With DD it was popcorn. Couldn't stomach the smell especially if an office mate burnt it.

I couldn't eat candy or drink soda when I was pregnant with DD, anything too sweet made me nauseous.  That went away after I had DD although I rarely drink soda as it is anyways.  I had major red meat cravings with DD.  I use to love eating steak, but I can't eat it anymore.  I will never eat at Taco Bell again or Sonic cheeseburgers, lol.

I also will never be able to drink ginger ale again.  I basically drank it to tame the sickness that now if I drink ginger ale it will bring all those icky memories back.

  • I couldn't eat sweet potatoes which I ate all the time prior but I can eat them now. I couldn't brew coffee, the smell got too me. I had to buy it everyday or once my work got a Keruig I would put a cup in and walk out of the kitchen.

  • I had a wicked bad Chinese food aversion. It ticked me off because Chinese food is and always has been one of my favorites. Even smelling it made me gag while pregnant. The thought of eating it would make me puke. It sounded and smelled so nasty. Thankfully, yes, it went away.  It took awhile, though? I think almost a year.

I had RAW meat aversions while pregnant.. especially ground beef. Cooking it was horrible, would make me gag.  So my H often fried up the beef or cut chicken and then I would prepare the rest. I could eat it, just not deal with it raw. That went away immediately.

I didn't eat guac or tomatoes my whole entire life because eww. I will eat guac until I can't stomach it anymore and I won't be picky about anything with tomatoes.
