1st birthday party help!

I know there's a birthday party board but it doesn't get much traffic, so I thought I would just ask you guys!

dd turns one mid November. I am going to have her birthday on Sunday the 16th for close friends and family (about 15 people total, most likely). I just have a few questions about details.

She takes a long, late morning nap so I am thinking a party that starts around 2 or 3? Just a few other (young) kids coming and I believe that's clear of nap time.

What type of food should I serve? I.e. Lunch, snack type foods, or just desserts and some finger foods?

What sort of activities can I have for people? Should I just rely on people mingling with each other, serve food, do gifts and then cake?

It doesn't get cold here but there is a lot of wind and possibly rain that time of year.

Any suggestions of ideas or changes are much appreciated! Thanks

  • How many other kids will be there? I might have an activity or 2 for them, if possible. Maybe colouring pages, or decorating a mask in your theme? Cookie decorating? Small craft?

For foods, the time makes me think apps then cake. How long do you intend people to stay? If more than a couple hours, you're getting into dinner time.

  • @jorkz821 thank you for your suggestions!!
There will be a couple 1 year olds, a two year old, and some older grade school kids. I think cookie decorating is a great idea for them!

And I am thinking 2-3 hours MAX staying so maybe 2:00-4/5:00 would be a good cutoff time. Thank you again!
  • Thank YOU for the reminder that I need to start planning DS's birthday which is in... [checks calendar]... 3 weeks. OMG.

  • I would do the party from 3-5 abd just have apps and cake. IME, most kids don't need an activity. At home parties, they seem to just play with the toys at the house. DS' s friend did cupcake decorating at his party and none of the kids actually participated. They were happy just playing with each other.

  • We did a home party. We did sloppy joes, pasta salad, chips, baked beans, fruits, veggies, and cake

  • Thank you everyone so much!!! Hearing experiences from other home parties helps a lot!
  • At 1 and 2 they don't need any structured activities. I started doing those for my older ones third birthday...we did a Dino dig, I made dinosaur eggs to crack and they colored dinosaur masks. His little friend had cupcake decorating and a safari hunt for little plastic animals at his third birthday. All were hits. In your case, I would have balls, bubbles, etc.

  • November here can be warm still or pretty cool, so maybe I'll have most stuff indoors, but offer stuff outside too.

Only 2 grade school kids (my BIL and SIL) so I don't think I'll plan a structured activity, just have toys and movies on hand for the toddlers :)

    Thanks again!
