Birth control

I am trying to figure out which to get. I haven't been on any for a long time. I've narrowed it down to mirena or the pill. Anyone have experience with mirena.

I get severe pms every month and I'm trying to see if birth control will
Help with that.

I also weighed 200 lbs a few years ago and have gotten down to 130 so I'm nervous about weight gain but I know most birth controls cause atleast some weight gain.

TIA!

Re: Birth control

  • I have no experience with Mirena, but have heard mixed reviews.

Also, no personal experience, so take with a grain of salt, but I know there are some bc options out there made to help with severe PMS/PMDD...maybe its worth asking your dr about those?

I personally used Nuvaring for years (bwfore kids) which was nice bc it was a low dose of hormones and not many side effects. However, when I tried going back on it after having my son, i soon figured out that my body just doesnt tolerate hormonal bc as well anymore. I had a lot of trouble losing the baby weight, was very moody, etc. But everybody is different, so you may end up finding one you really like. GL!

  • I loved Mirena for about nine months - until a routine checkup showed I was 8w pregnant. Yikes. Same thing also happened to my best friend the year before, and I went with Mirena anyway on the logic that "lightning doesn't strike the same place twice". My bad.... So I wouldn't use it as BC but it DID make my periods super short (1-2 days) and super light after a month or so of on-off spotting.

  • Yikes!! Deeeefffinitely do not want another baby anytime soon! I'm treading water on good days!

Anyone ever taken yaz or Yasmin? Those are the two that have been linked with alleviating pmdd/pms

My OBGYN was seriously insane. A freaky 70 year old man who didn't seem to know much of anything. He was a total psycho.
  • I've had Mirena for almost 2 years and I have no complaints. It was a little uncomfortable to have inserted and I bled/cramped for a few weeks afterwards. I get a very light period once a month and only one day of cramps. I really like not having to think about it and I don't think it's done anything to my weight, but who really knows since my body is totally different post-partum.
  • Actually, I did take yazmin years ago (back in like high school or something), and I remember loving the fact that it made me actually LOSE weight, but due to the higher dose of hormones, I was also dealing with migraines and nausea, so I ultimately had to switch to something different.

  • I'm on my second Mirena. Insertion was very painful, but that's not common. I had the first one for 4yrs with no problems and no periods after the first few months. I got the second one 8w PP and have had no issues with it either.

  • My sister has PMDD and she is on Yaz. I think it helps. She can be a grade A witch around her period.
  • I'm on my second mirena and I have zero complaints. I was on the pill for years before TTC my oldest and I think it actually exacerbated my monthly hormonal shifts.

The mirena both times has virtually eliminated my period. Maybe a half day of spotting barely light enough for a pantiliner. It's awesome.

I took Yasmin for years & it worked great for me, I loved it!
  • I have mirena and am having some major side effects....depression, mood swings, acne, weight gain. I'm discussing with my obgyn tomorrow and may have it removed. Some people have no side effects. Before having kids I was on Nuvaring and loved it. I may try it again. I was also on Lo Estrin fe for years and years and liked that too.

  • Like pp I was unable to tolerate hormonal birth control after having kids. It makes my pms psycho more psychotic so I had to stop. Before I had kids I took a pill that altered progesterone, rather than estrogen like most pills. I can't remember the name but it was the best pill I ever took. And I took many different kinds over 15 years. I had zero cramps, my moods were stable, no headaches, lost weight. Sadly, I tried to go back on it after kids and it was very very bad.

    I know nothing about mirena.

I'm looking for a permanent BC besides a tubal ligation, but so far all the options I've explored, I can't get for one reason or another. So, I basically barely have sex bag when we do we use a condom.

    Worst sex life right here...
  • Thanks for all the tips and advice. I'm so torn. The thought of something being semi permanently chilling in my body freaks me out but the biggest thing I'm trying to do aside from not have a baby is get my pms(or pmdd as I have self diagnosed) under control.

Without fail about 6 days before my period I'm a hot mess. Slightly depressed, totally anxious and tense.

I think I'm going to visit another Obgyn. When I say the guy I last saw was crazy, I mean it. I can't believe I even let him do my annual. Within the first few minutes of meeting him he insinuated that my husband is likely to cheat on me and I could very easily contract aids. Then he went on to say something along the lines of having sex with me AFTER my Pap smear was over. I believe his exact words were "it's not like I'm trying to knock it out with you."

Just weird and uncomfortable. Hopefully I can get more valid info elsewhere.

But if anyone else reading this has any personal experience with pills or mirena feel free to add.. It helps to read other's experience.

Was on Yaz for years & loved loved it. After MS was born she switched me to the Ortho pill. I liked it too, but Yaz was better IMO.

No experience with any other type. I am not into having something implanted inside me. Gives me the heebee-jeebees!
