  It might also be worth it to check at the hospital . . . When I was discharged yesterday there were several families with babies leaving as well and someone from the fire department who was certified was checking car seats as they left. It seems a lot of them volunteer to spend some of their time doing that here. That being said I will still probably get mine checked before hand but it is good info to know, especially if something happens and you don't get out checked before hand or baby makes a surprise entrance early that that may be an option.

  I would call and ask. I know the fire department by me does them for free by appointment, the police barracks will do it for free without an appointment (but you have to wait usually), and there is a woman who does it as her business who will come to your home (she has a fee).
