Anyone else here been diagnosed with gestational diabetes ? I just found out yesterday & now take blood tests 4 times a day plus a revamp of my vegitarian diet.
I have not. I haven't had to take the test yet though. Fx for no GD. I'm very sorry that you have to deal with it though. I've had friends with GD and I tried to ensure that we did diners at their house or mine so that they wouldn't have to suffer through everyone else eating everything while they had restrictions.
Sorry to hear that. What kind of changes do you have to make to your veg diet? Just curious since I'm also veg. I passed my 11-wk test but have to take one again at 24/26 weeks. I was fine last time around though.
Sorry to hear about your GD. I had it with my son, and it was really not that difficult to manage. Has your OB set you up with a nutritionist? If not, you may want to see one.
F15 December Siggy Challenge: Holiday Decoration Fails
No I haven't been diagnosed, but I also haven't had the test yet. Though, I'm sure my weight has affected my chances of getting it, so I'm sure I'll be dealing with it soon. I am hoping like hell that I don't have it, but if I do, I pray that I can manage with my already clean diet rather than sticking to insulin shots; not a big fan of needles over here. Finger poke tests I can deal with, but insulin injections may just push me over the edge of my sanity.
I have been diagnosed since 12 weeks because I had it with my last pregnancy too. It is not too bad if you can keep it diet controlled. I have been lucky that I have been able to do that. My Dr. has actually take me down from 4 tests a day to only having to test twice a day. I always have to get my fasting draw in but then I can pick which meal to check after and just rotate them. Of course if I have something I think might drive my sugar up I test after that as well but things have been going pretty well. I have found some things I can have but probably need to cut back on the amount and other things that work out really well even though I was a little worried. My Dr. does not mind me experimenting with my diet a little to see what works best.
uqkj - I am vegetarian too and received "the dreaded call" from my doctor's office today. I passed my 12 week one and though for sure I would pass the one later on. No such luck. 28 weeks and I am freaking out.
I am waiting to hear back from the endo to see what my next steps are. If it's not too much trouble could you give me an idea of what you eat to help keep it in control? Thanks.
Just took my 3 hour test yesterday, if not phone call this week, then I'm in the clear. FX!
F15 January Siggy Challenge: What I'm Looking Forward to After the Babies Arrive Bringing them both home...UPDATE...The girls are home!!! 1/7/15 after 20 days in the NICU!
I had it with both boys and just got the call today that I do NOT have it with this pregnancy (which comes with its own set of freak outs).
First, GD does not just correlate with weight. Both my BFF and I are of very average weight and we've both had it.
Second, while the diet is not fun, it's the only "high risk" pregnancy issue that can more or less be totally controlled with discipline and will power. I had two very healthy baby boys and no complications (even though I did end up on insulin in the final few weeks both times because of high fasting numbers that I could not get in check no matter what I ate!).
I think being a vegetarian adds a layer of difficulty to the diet, so I definitely recommend working with a good dietician/nutritionist.
It's not fun, but for me it meant extra monitoring (which was reassuring at times) and kept my weight gain in check in those final few months. I'm actually kind of nervous about both of those things NOT being diabetic this time! Good luck!
Representing for the pre-existing diabetic moms. I don't even have to drink the drink or do the draws because I'd fail, yo.
Come sit next to me.
Diabetes is a risk factor for like, everything bad. So don't go there with yourself (or on the internet. Just don't). I have a healthy two year old, had one m/c and have a seemingly healthy baby boy on the way.
I check my blood sugars 5x daily. I have ultrasounds every 4 weeks for growth and to check the placenta and will start weekly non-stress tests at 29 weeks, likely to be induced somewhere after 36 weeks supposing that my cerclage holds and no pre-term labor (another issue not related to diabetes but whatever).
I count my carbs every day and am conscious about what I am eating even if it contains natural sugars (fruits, starchy veggies) and can see what's happening due to the frequent blood glucose monitoring. I weigh myself everyday. During my first pregnancy I saw a diabetic educator and nutritionist. They were alright. It was a trial and error thing with me with different foods. Watermelon no problem on the blood sugars but bananas are a disaster for me. Weird stuff like that.
It is a lot of work but I have excellent glycemic control and it is worth it because the baby sees what I see.
You've got this. You probably don't need all the stuff I have to do as above but I wanted to provide you some perspective. Hugs to you.

Do they test everyone in the beginning (around 12 weeks)? I should probably already know the answer to this having two babies.
I didn't test at 12. I just took my test at 24. Even though I'm overweight, I passed. Some of my girlfriends who are thin and in shape failed the one-hour test, so I can't say why some pass and others don't but I don't think it is solely a weight thing.
I have it and have had it with all 3 pregnancies, the last one was rough and I was on injectable insulin this time I'm taking a pill twice a day. I'm 6 months and have only gained 4 lbs thanks to watching my carbs/diet. Carbs are the biggest culprit and I agree you need to see a nutritionist to help you get and idea iof foods you can/ can't or should/shouldn't eat... Good luck
I'm sorry. I can only guess it can be a pain in the butt at times. I just got a call from my doctor sayin I failed the 1 hour test and I go to take the 3 hour test tomorrow. Don't stress too much!
Re: Gestational diabetes.
Hopefully the changes aren't too terrible.
