Air Travel

My husband and I moved 12 hours away from family during my pregnancy. MIL has been to visit since DD was born (almost 5 weeks ago) but my mom isn't able to get away as easily and I'm missing her!

My grandmother died this morning after a long battle with cancer, and I'm debating whether or not to make the trip home for the funeral AND to see my mom for the first time since baby arrived. H would not be able to leave work to go with us so I'd be flying solo with the babe.

Any advice or tips about flying with a 5-6 week old?? Am I crazy?

  • I think I read somewhere that if you have a moby or sling, you can wear baby through security. Just make sure you don't have a jacket on underneath. I imagine that would be easier than taking baby in and out of the car seat or stroller. My little guy prefers to be held over his seat anyway. I've not flown with my little guy yet though, so I don't actually have any experience with this.

Sorry about your grandma, and good luck traveling!

  • I am sorry about your grandmother. Flying with a small baby is very easy (compared to a toddler!) you can wear the baby through security, no issue. Also, if you are breast feeding, it's an easy way to make take off/landing pressure changes be no issue.

I flew with DS when he was 8 weeks old, but I also bought him a seat so I could have his car seat on the plane. He didn't use it much but I wasn't comfortable checking the seat in case it would be damaged or compromised.

  • So sorry to hear about your grandmother :(. I would definitely make the trip. New babies bring so much hope and comfort especially in times of grief and being together with family in this difficult time will hopefully help you as well.

I just flew with DS at 3.5 and 4.5 weeks (there and back) -- it wasn't bad at all. The hardest part was carrying all the necessary things through the airport. We skipped the PnP and just brought the car seat, clothes, and diapers (though you should ask family to pick up a package for you instead).

We checked the car seat. Definitely wear your LO through airport security. They'll let you keep baby attached to you and also you skip the scanning machine. Bring a spare outfit for both you and baby just in case -- it would suck to smell like sour milk all day long. And I second nursing during takeoff and especially landing to help LO's ears equalize.

We have a "travel car seat" for DD for this reason. The Cosco Scerena is $40 at WalMart and passes all the same safety standards as the expensive seats. It's a convertible seat and we didn't get it until DD was over a year old so no idea how it works with tiny babies. But it was much more affordable for me to pay $40 and check that seat than $300 for another cross country ticket.
  • @shevaCC‌ - very smart idea for an air travel car seat :) duly noted for next flight!
