Furnish my home!

Just for fun, because it's driving me crazy, my house is so bare! My DH has refused to let me decorate/buy furniture since we bought our home because we aren't finished remodeling. Well it's been 2 years and I'm sick of it and all his ugly bachelor furniture! I have an enormous living room, and no idea how to decorate it! The ceiling is supposed to have cedar tongue and groove (someday when we get around to it). Any ideas on what I can put beside this enormous TV? Since all you ladies have babies too, I figure you can give me some baby friendly tips?

  • You need something big on the walls on either side to balance that tv. Are you going to get any type of entertainment center? Make sure any furniture you get is either low and sturdy, or attached to the wall so it can't fall over on LO.

  • That stupid TV is too big to fit in an entertainment center. I was thinking lots of shelving? I will be sure to anchor whatever goes there, but I can't figure out what type of shelving.

And I have lots of couches ;)

  • Can you wall mount your tv? I think it would look better that way.

    It all revolves around you.
  • ITK I'll take it! Lol but the shipping for furniture probably wouldn't be worth it.

  • Nope it's old and has a big back, and is super heavy. Maybe I should toss the TV and mount our smaller one on the wall.

  • Can you post some pics from other angles?  I'm having a hard time getting the lay of the land from this one pic.
  • What style house is it? What sort of aesthetic do you like?

Here's the room empty when our floors were finished. To the left by the windows is the the dining room

    Edit to add

The house is way out in the woods. We have a rustic style. I also have the biggest rug I could find down. Art is hard because the walls aren't very high because the ceiling comes down so far.

  • Oh that's going to look kick ass with the cedar on the ceiling!  What about putting the TV in the corner next to the windows, kitty-cornered?  That way you can arrange the seating so you can watch TV or enjoy the view.  I think sitting and facing the windows will make the room seem much more spacious instead of using the shortest wall in the room as a focal point.

I know what you mean about artwork on short walls.  I had a bedroom like this once.  I think putting up shelves or low bookcases against the walls with books, baskets, knick knacks, etc. is a nice way to bring in color and texture.  Obviously you'll have to anchor and choose toddler friendly stuff.
  • Yes! Amazing ideas @stoneycakes‌! It is big enough for two spaces...there's a big floor to ceiling brick fireplace on the other side of the room. I'm going to try splitting it and see what I can do. Just need more furniture!

  • Well now I need pics of the fireplace, @Sgriff1!  We have a lot of the same architectural features in our living room and I need more furniture, too.
  • Crappy picture, but here it is before we moved in when we were painting/doing the floors. I've since gotten a lot of the soot off of the brick.

  • Cool place, Sgriff!  I would definitely make one seating area around the windows/TV and one around the fireplace.  Is that a planter next to the fireplace?
  • Thanks! It's been a ton of work...and that's a huge area for firewood. We're going to try that! I told DH that my "internet friends" suggested we rearrange the living room and he's actually in agreement :)

I've been using google images, pinterest and Houzz for decorating ideas with great success.  I even found an image of a living room I really fell in love with and I emailed the interior decorator who did it with a question about something I couldn't see in the pic.  She emailed me back right away with an answer!  So it never hurts to ask an interior decorator a quick question :)
  • Also, on the topic of remodeling, I love the show Fixer Upper on HGTV.   Do you guys watch it?  I think the couple is so cute and I love the way they retain the original character of the houses they do rather than gutting everything. single. thing.  Plus it doesn't come across as overly contrived like so many other "reality" shows.
