Sore nipples

Hi ladies! Hope you can help me with this painful issue. LO is almost 8mo old and is EBF 4 days/week and gets expressed BM 3 days/week while I am at work. I EBF'd last week while we were on vacation and now my nipples feel bruised and sore.

I noticed she has been pulling during nursing recently. She is also easily distracted. I've tried nursing in a quiet dark room and she still pulls, relatches for a few seconds then pulls off again. I was thinking teething could have something to do with it. Any other thoughts? I (and my painfully sore nips) appreciate any feedback!

Re: Sore nipples

  • distractibility is common around 8-10 months. nursing in a quiet, dark room is a great idea. i'd also make sure that you watch her carefully while nursing and de-latch her as SOON as she starts to lose focus. you may have to stop for a little while and restart later.

can you try nursing in a different position? lying down? or with your LO sitting up and facing you? that might help relieve the soreness, and might also make it difficult for her to pull off so easily.

you can apply cold compresses to your breasts and take advil to help with the soreness. i'd also use nipple cream or coconut oil on your nipples (or just expressed BM).

  • Thank you for the ideas! I've tried having her sit to nurse but she is even more distracted that way. Holding her arms still seems to help a bit so thank you for that. I'll just work on paying more attention to her signs (no more bumping and nursing) and release suction before she tries to turn her head.

Also I totally forgot about what I used to do when she was a newborn and I was dealing with soreness. I guess she's not the only one who is distracted. Back to basics it is!
