How much "stuff" do I actually need?

My DH and I aren't getting a lot of "baby holder" thingys, but we still need blankets, bibs, burb cloths, towels, wash cloths, etc. I've looked online at suggestions, but I'm not sure what actual moms use and it's been so long since I've needed this stuff that I have no clue!

So, I'm just wondering how many of the following do you think I actually need: blankets (A+A kind), bottles (FF only-do I need the little ones and the 8/10oz ones? I'm thinking no?), bibs, burb cloths (we'll probably do prefolds. Is this stupid?) towels, wash cloths and anything else that I'm not thinking of!

Thanks ladies. I'm trying to get the little stuff out of the way and I don't want to over purchase since I can always get more later, but I want to be prepared enough that my sore ass isn't having to worry about it after birth!

Oh my gosh! I forgot about that site! Thanks!!

Edited to Add: The site tells what you need, but not how much of some things, so I'm still in the dark for most of these items.

I think it really depends on how often you will do laundry.

I didn't use burp cloths. I just kept a blanket around at all times and used that. Some days I would just use one blanket a day, other days we went through 4-5. I try to do laundry every other day so I tried to get at least 10 blankets just to be sure. I have 5 "good" blankets and 5 spare whatever blankets. I also rarely used bibs. My boys weren't huge droolers and I kept them in just a diaper for most of the day (summer babies). I did use them when we were going somewhere nice or feeding them out and about. I think we kept maybe like 5 or 6.

Wash cloths and towels, I had like 8 washcloths (I think one pack) and like 3 towels. Depending on skin sensitivity, you bath them every other day or so at first. I usually used 2 washcloths per bath. One to wash and one to keep over his wiener so he didn't pee on me and helped to keep him warm.

I nursed my boys, but as well with my first. I would be careful trying to stock up on bottles right now. Kids are weird, and there is a good chance you will go through several kinds of bottles before finding the right one.

  • I never really needed burp clothes as my baby almost never spat up. But I did go throught small clothes and still do at a rate of 3-5 per day. Their use has varied over time, but I've got at least 50. I just made them myself - bought some cheap flannel cloth, cut them to size and surged the edges, although you could probably skip that step of you don't sew. I use them for baths, wiping up after meals, cleaning the high chair, cleaning toys, and often in place of wipes because my daughter has somewhat sensitive skin.

We used prefolds. Literally had like 50 for #1 because he had reflux. Barely used them with #2. Maybe start with one pack and get more if needed. Get a few regular receiving blankets (the regular kind) so you can keep a couple in the car etc. One 4-pk of the A&A kind should be plenty. I think that's what I had for each kid and it seemed like plenty. For bottles you can skip the 4 oz size. We used drop ins for both but one was very picky about the nipple (wanted latex not silicone) so don't buy a lot yet. I thought id like the wipe-able bibs but ended up preferring the cloth ones so I could throw them in the wash. Again, how many you go through will depend on the baby.

My mom always used pre-folds as burp cloths and they seemed to work just fine.

the one I'm confused on is wash cloths. I mean... what's wrong with regular washcloths? Why are specific baby ones necessary?
My first was SOO chunky. Regular washcloths were too thick to fit between all his rolls and nooks. So not necessary, but helpful.

My son has very sensitive skin so only one kind of baby washcloth has been good for him. I think it's a preference thing. Even some of the baby ones are really rough. I always used two, one for the tummy to keep him warm and one for the washing. Plus, like @kdm06c said, it helps to cover the weiner on boys to prevent getting peed on. Warm bath water + baby boy = peed on every time.

Good to know. This is my first foray into baby boy land, and I'm starting to realize how much of my "third-time mom" knowledge is going to be completely useless.

  • Adult towels - because when you run out of clean laundry they can be used for anything.

Example - kid craps on the changing cover, you're good.  kid craps on self, you're good.  kid craps on you, the wall, his clothes, his blanket, the swing he was sitting in, the floor, another kid who now needs a bath....all these applications you're totally set.
  • I have used cloth diapers with both my kids as burp cloths and I won't use anything else. They are cheap, easily washed and are good for more than just spit up. I've used them as a place to change diapers, to wipe up formula or BM that runs down their chin and for spit up.

Baby was cloths are great for covering up little boy parts and they are just so much softer of their skin. I usually but one large pack and they last forever!
