change in poop color

Hi all - so sorry if this this has already been asked a million times. I'm mobile and up in the mountains, and searching wasn't very productive. I noticed last night that LO's poop was not its normal orange color, and also his first poopy diaper of today still looks weird. It's yellowish green and even with a tan or light brown shade to it. Google tells me this could be perfectly normal, or it could be a sign that he's getting too much fore milk, or it could be a sign of illness. Just curious what others did in this situation! Thanks!

Edited to add he's 5 weeks old and EBF.

Re: change in poop color

  • My pedi says a range of colors is totally normal. If your LO is otherwise acting normal, I wouldn't be worried. But I'm not a worrier by nature. If my babe is eating, pooping and peeing, I assume all is well! :)

If you're BFing, you could try offering the same boob after your LO pops off for the first time and after a burp. That would increase hind milk consumption. If you're pumping, I always try to make sure I completely empty the boob and don't have just milk from the start of the pump in my bottles.

  • I just heard that white and red are the colors to possibly be concerned about. My LO's ranges from mustard to greenish.

  • The poo itself is mustard color...the chunks are white though. Blech

    Normal.

  • I never thought I'd care so much about another person's poop, butttttt: my LO has had green poop consistently for probably the last month. It's occasionally mucousy. Her pediatrician didn't seem worried since she's gaining well and doesn't have any other symptoms. Should I be concerned?? I've been working to make sure she's not getting too much foremilk but it doesn't seem to have an impact. Could it be a dairy sensitivity? I just don't know.
  • I called my pedi today and mentioned the greenish poops to the nurse who took my call and she said it just meant the breast milk was going through her system quickly. They weren't concerned.

If your pediatrician says it's fine, it probably is. My LO's poo fluctuates from bright green to tan to mustard yellow throughout the day and she's fine. Also, the main symptom of food sensitivities is extreme fussiness, so if you're not dealing with that there's no reason to worry.
  • Thanks @esmith10‌ and @KittyMisha‌
I'll bring it up at her 2 month appointment, but I won't worry too much about it until then :)
  • We also have green poop far more often than yellow. Ped was not concerned, and I'm fairly certain hindmilk isn't the issue, since I drain one breast per feeding.
