Cloth Diapering

few tips I thought I would share!

I was doing my diapers today, and I made a mental list of things that I wish I would’ve known going into CDing.  I felt the urge to jot it down because it may be helpful to some newbies.  Before LO was born, I spent countless hours poring over this board and a few others learning everything I could.  But sometimes you just have to live and learn!

  1. Don’t feel the need to create a stash right away.  I bought a zillion different types of diapers because I didn’t know what I was going to like.  Like many others recommended, I didn’t get too many of one diaper.  I did the 15 day trial on Nickis and settled on mostly best bottoms in aplix.  I sent a lot of other things back.  15 days is not long enough to determine what you like.  And my tastes have changed over the past 11 months.  I figured over the course of several months that I like pockets and snaps.  Now I wish I had all pockets and snaps.

  2. Get your wash routine down early. Im still trying to figure out my wash routine 11 months later.  I think I finally got it.  About 9 pockets, 3 AI2s with 12 inserts and a wet towel equals 3 Tbsp of Country Save.  If your diapers have any stink to them, be diligent of figuring this out early.  Keep at it, don’t live with stinky diapers!

  3. Trimness matters BIG TIME!  This goes along with my first tip.  I never realized how much trimness matters, but you cant dress your baby with a big fluffy diaper.  Or if you do, and you put pants on them that are way too big, they look obese.  Especially getting into the colder months, trimness is big, so be on the lookout for the trimmest diaper for your baby.  I don’t care for flips otherwise, but they are super trim and I wish I had more of them.

  4. Microfiber sucks.  Ive never minded the way mf felt, so I always wondered why many CD mamas had a problem with it.  I know now.  It holds onto stink, and at 9 mo, my DS grew out of the absorbency of most of my MF inserts.  Unfortunately, I didn’t know this when I created my stash, and MF was cheaper, so I got all MF.  Bamboo is much trimmer, cotton is great too.  Im in the process of replacing my MF with that.

What do you experienced CD mamas have to add?

  • It's really bothering me that you said babies who have to wear a size up look obese.

  • Girls! Don't be so sensitive! No harm meant! Maybe it's just his build because he is skinny waisted but has chunky thighs. If we want him to wear pants at all, a fluffy cd makes pants so tight across his crotch that he can't move, but they gap at the waist and he looks ridiculous. It's a real problem!
  • Offering CD advice when asked about something specific- cool.  Putting up a random post filled with advice- I don't get it???  Especially since it's things that are soo specifically important to YOU.

  • My baby probably is obese. At least of babies could be obese. He's got about a million rolls.

Oh boy. I thought this meant "quit fucking playing." Always worked in my head.
Same! I still read it that way.

Guess my kid is obese. He's 4.5 months and wears up to 12 months clothes.

What's your advice on that OP? Guess my kid needs some exercise or something.
  • Umm, my 18 month old wears a 4T. She's also 32in tall & I love her fluffy butt! She's definitely not obese!
  • I recently bought my 9 month, 50th percentile, baby 3t pants. They look like yoga pants, I just tacked the length up a bit. I never thought I had an obese kid. Oh, well live and learn.

My 16 month old wears 9-12 month clothes. Should I feed her more?

Ohhh I know! I should buy bulkier diapers?
But then she might get sweaty

And being in a sweaty uncomfortable CD causes babies to not sttn. We all know that

@ElleBeeDub‌ Clearly you are favoring your younger child. The older one is going to be scarred for life!
  • @candlequeen‌ Not too far behind you with a 17lb 5oz 18 month old....he's 29 inches tall too. He is sort of V shaped through his torso so a fluffy butt gives him a more normal torso shape.....IDK about holding pants on since he doesn't get verticle much yet.....and I've had him in rompers all summer.

Rompers? My kid just wears a diaper and shirts. I haven't been putting pants on him til recently since it's gotten cooler out.
  • I think we ran off OP

Yeah, you really have to be careful with rompers. Sometimes they are puffy, and might make your baby look obese. #rompersarearealproblem

Somehow that's not an issue this year.....considering he was wearing the same rompers this year as he did last year.....andplusalso these rompers were what I'd call glorified onesies....the only difference is that the crotch area snapped to make shorts. Given ds's waist is only about 14inches and his thighs are about 9 inches around, a poofy romper would make him look like a lollipop instead of obese.
