How to know when to go in?

So I am 39 weeks and 5 days. Earlier today I tried a little of nipple stimulation to see if it actually worked, and I guess it did! I know the docs say to wait until the contractions are 5 mins apart but I am having PAINFUL, irregular ones though. Should I wait until they DO become 5 mins apart or go in now? I don't want to go in if it's false labor!!! Thanks!

Nipple stimulation will increase your contractions for sure. I don't think you're in false labor, but it's hard to tell without any other indicators. Mucus plug, membranes rupturing, blood, etc.

Docs say 5 minutes for a reason. Call the after hours number if you want to double check but I would labor at home until 5-1-1. And what Jacobson said.

My guess is that OP is still 37 weeks but doesn't want to get flamed for for trying to induce baby during early term. OP - seriously, we have some smart ladies here... did you think people wouldn't realize who you are?
