This sounds like a pulled muscle, right? Or sciatica? But not back labor?

Background: I've had low back problems since DD was born. I was seeing a chiro earlier this pregnancy, but haven't been in about 2 months because everything has been manageable. I'm almost 39 weeks, and as of Wednesday, not dilated or effaced at all. I just scheduled my RCS for next Friday. Oh, and I recently learned that the tingly numbness in my right outer thigh is probably sciatica. But I've never really had the traditional shooting pain associated with sciatica, just this tingling. About an hour and a half ago, I got out of bed to go to the bathroom, and it felt like when I bent down that little bit to flush the toilet, something just went terribly wrong in my low back. It hurt like no back pain has ever hurt me before. The whole area of my lower back, just right of my spine felt like someone was stabbing a hot poker through it. I made it back to bed, and was writhing in agony that seemed to go in waves and felt like a spreading heat for a good 40 minutes while I googled what back labor felt like, because I was never in labor with DD and I just don't know. Poor DH managed to get me my hot water bottle and that's helping and so is getting on my hands and knees and rocking my hips a little. The pain is coming and going now and isn't quite as bad as it was, though I still can't find a comfortable position and I feel like I'm never getting back to sleep. I managed to walk back to the bathroom and pee again, so there's that. I'm having some contractions, but they're mostly just tightening, and not as much the low, painful ones. Not evenly spaced, either, just here and there. It sounds like I pulled something, right? I feel like, because I felt like there was a moment when it started and a specific movement that seemed to initiate the pain, it's totally an injury and not back labor. Is this more sciatica related, maybe? Obviously I know you all aren't doctors, and I'm planning to give this til morning before I decide whether I need to call I or go to the dr or whatever, but I'm looking for input, especially from you guys that have had back labor or have experience with sciatica. Thanks!

  • Sorry that was a big block of text - I'm on iPad.

  • I managed to lay down and sleep for about 2 hours before DD woke up. It feels more like regular back pain now, and not the searing awfulness that it did last night. It's still bad, and worse than my usual back pain, but it's more manageable. I'm going to take some Tylenol and ride it out for a while. But I'm not really concerned that it's back labor anymore. I was a little panicky in the middle of the night, though. Thanks for the input everyone!

  • I have a pinched nerve in my back and that's what my flare ups sound like. It's no fun to carry this extra weight that pulls right on that old injury. Hope you feel better soon and if you do call the Doc, keep us posted :)

  • Glad you are feeling better! I had back labor with DS and while it's all in your back and hips, it definitely feels like labor in that the contractions have a rhythm to them. I also have dealt with sciatic pain and it sounds to me like it could be that or simply your pelvis rotated or did something funky to cause pain. Last weekend I could barely move from horrible pelvic and lower back pain. I was worried that I too could be in labor but I think it was just the baby pressing on something because the pain went away after a few days and now I'm completely back to normal.

  • Your sacroiliac joint may have popped out of whack when you bent over which can cause I wave of reaction from all of the surrounding stabilizing muscles. It can be pretty awful and with the sciatic nerve passing right through there and muscles in spasm...sounds like injury to me. I've had trouble with my SI joint not being stable during this pregnancy and causing back pain from time to time. Glad it's better and time will help. Plus getting that baby out!!
