The infamous 6 week growth spurt

DS turned 6 weeks yesterday, and I did notice some extra cluster feeding in the evening the past couple days, so perhaps he's gearing up for that infamous growth spurt. BUT... he's also suddenly sleeping a lot more, and much more deeply. Do these two behaviors go hand in hand? It seems that if he needs to eat more for a growth spurt he'd be much more awake and cranky.

We had an awesome day of sleep that came after a few days of eating more. I'm pretty sure that was the growth spurt. The all day sleep fest did not last unfortunately.

  • You do most of your growing while you're asleep. You eat more for the calories then you sleep more to do the actual growing.

  • My son slept a lot better during growth spurts, he was not a gifted sleeper otherwise. But any time he was awake, he was eating (more than his baseline, which was lots). But sleepy a LOT more than usual

My experience with growth spurts has been a hungry day and a sleepy day. Hungry to gain the calories and sleepy to actually do the growing.

My LO just did this Thursday and Friday. She's 3 weeks tomorrow. Must have.been a late 2 weeks growth sourt.
  • OMG my little man must be at the 6 weeks growth spurt... He hit 6 weeks yesterday. I didn't know how good it had it until he became fussy more often. He's been sleeping through the night since 4 weeks, and a HAS grown a lot the past few days... But I'm having to bust out the 5 S's constantly the past couple days. He used to only fuss before meal times (he eats on a 3hour schedule), but now he's fussy even right after eating. I've been giving him some extra milk, but don't want to over feed... He's already eating 23oz without extra. Am I supposed to temporarily increase milk?

I'm curious about this, too! My LO is just under 3weeks and I think is going through a growth spurt. She is currently eating 3oz every 4hours (formula) and now she is wanting to eat sooner around the 3hour mark. Do I up her to 4oz temporarily, permanently, or keep feeding her 3oz when she wants it? Just wondering what other mama's do/suggest!

  • @IceHide61313‌ I'd suggest keeping her at 3 oz but firing more often if she needs it. I found that at 3 weeks DS's stomach still couldn't handle 4 oz, he'd just spit it back up, but I knew he was still hungry. I guess it depends on her size/weight, too. DS is now 6w3d and 11 lbs and we just upped him to 4oz at a time yesterday, though he's in a growth spurt and didn't spread out his feedings yet! He sleeps long stretches at night, though.

Thanks for your input! That is what I think I will do/am doing. It just sounded weird to me that a 3week old would eat 4oz so I decided 3oz every 3hrs sounded better :)

  • Mine is eating almost 4oz every 3 hours (no eating MOTN). Reverse feeding schedule!

  • PS I meant feeding not firing...
