Road trip with LO?

So we're planning on taking a road trip to see family since they all live out of state. It's a 12 hour drive and LO will be 6 weeks old. Im nervous about the drive, but perhaps doing it overnight will be best for her to adjust since it's sleeping hours. I'm also nervous about exposing her to so much and getting out of an routine (which isn't much). She is a great baby and sleeps great - both in a crib and RnP. She also is breastfeeding and supplements and takes a bottle well too. I guess I'm just worried since we've been home bound for so long and don't get out much. Does anyone think it's too early to take a trip like this? Any STM's take their kiddos on trips at an early age? I'm starting to reconsider taking the trip...

  • We were supposed to visit DHs family out of state while I was on mat leave but it's not going to happen. She is 7 weeks today and they live about 7 hours away. Honestly, I just wasn't up for it and I am paranoid about passing her around when she's this little. DHs grandma lives in a nursing home and they are filled with germs. She gets her 8 week shots soon and I'll get my flu shot ASAP so she'll get some immunity from the flu from me. Most importantly, DHs mom drives me effing batty and the thought of staying with them for a few days about put me over the edge so I said no!! :) Also, I'm in one of the states with TONS of cases of enterovirus so we're staying put until Thanksgiving. I think you would be fine to travel though so don't overthink it.
  • We just got back from a plane trip with DS and DD (why I've been MIA for the last week). He slept most of the time -- my toddler was definitely harder to entertain. But he also nurses frequently during the day which I couldn't do in the car so I think I'd try perhaps traveling at night. Otherwise you might have to stop every hour between nursing, diaper changes, possible screaming fits. Or it could go perfectly smoothly...it's really hard to say with a newborn. We're doing a 10 hour road trip to ILs for Thanksgiving so I'll be watching for other suggestions here as well.
  • I'd do it now. Infants are so much easier to road trip with than toddlers. We did a 10 hour drive at 6 months and it was harder than I thought but no where near as bad as it would be now at almost 2.

  • Bring some earplugs for any screaming fits in the car ;)

  • Infants are so much easier than toddlers. We live in NOWHEREVILLE, and regularly drive three hours (one way) for big shopping trips, doctors, to see friends, etc. I just nurse right before we leave and that gets us three hours of sleep in the car.
We will be doing a six hour trip this Thursday, and then at some point in October, LO and I will be doing a 12 hour trip alone while DS1 and DH stay home - bc travel with a toddler is hell.

I just make sure we stop every three hours for diapers, nursing, and letting EVERYONE stretch.
  • Thanks all! Feeling much better about taking the trip- I'll let y'all know how it goes!
