Crazy Swelling

So last week at my regular OB appointment I had gained 10 pounds. It was my first afternoon appointment. I'd gained 0 and 3 pounds at the two previous appointments respectively and had been actually trying to be more active and mindful of what I'm eating. This week, I have noticed my ankles and legs swelling and went to the OB and I had gained another 8 pounds in a week. They think about 15 pounds pounds or so is fluid and told me to elevate my feet, limit sodium, etc. I've been weighing myself and I'm gaining about ten pounds a day between morning and night. Just wondering if any of you ladies have had similar issues with this kind of swelling this early on and had found any tricks that worked to alleviate it. It's super-uncomfortable and the elevation hasn't helped much yet.

Re: Crazy Swelling

  • Honestly, I'm almost 30 weeks, it doesn't seem that early to me! My feet and fingers started swelling around 20 weeks. However, it's also ungodly hot and humid here so I'm sure that contributed. I've found that if I drown myself in water daily and put my feet up as much as possible, it's not been as bad. Does your OB have any other advice for you?

@leosmom25‌ - just what I said and the water, which I also drown in. Oh, and I'm bringing sexy back this weekend and getting some compression hose. So maybe that will help. I'm not even at 26 weeks yet and I went from a little bit of swelling to jet-puff marshmallow girl seemingly overnight! I'm getting tempted to see if I can take a needle and pop myself...

  • That sounds awful! I have no advice, but am very sorry you're going through this.

  • @Drgn30‌ - that's why I went in to the OB pretty quick - BP has actually been a little lower than pre-pregnancy and I did urine tests both appointments and all is clear. I did a lot of driving this weekend and early this week and I think that triggered inevitable swelling...

  • I'm @ 27wks & have started having major swelling. Mostly in the afternoons & evenings. I went to my OB also in a rush to make sure blood pressure wasn't thru the roof or anything. They didn't do a urine test though. I might ask them about that @ next appt. BP has been fine. They didn't really say I need to watch sodium but I can sure tell if I eat something loaded with it. Feet and calves get so swollen & hurt! I don't have any great suggestions other than elevate feet & drink lots of water. I might try some compression hose like others have suggested. Just know I feel your pain!
  • @vrae0606 - your profile pic even looks like me! I suppose we can suffer together. My mom and cousins had terrible swelling (my cousin had her baby in July and had over 40 pounds of fluid on her by the end!). I was really hoping to avoid that but I may be out of luck...

  • Watermelon and cranberry juice are natural diuretics. I swell like crazy after my c-sections and if I chug a decent amount of cranberry juice I can feel the difference. (Get actual cranberry juice, not the Ocean Spray crap. You have to really read labels because it tastes awful by itself so most brands have more apple or grape juice than actual cranberry.)
  • I'm sorry about your swelling! This is always my concern, especially with my history of pree & HBP. I agree with @Eora3‌, also cucumber and celery.
  • Yikes, that sounds like some massive swelling. I would walk as much as you can(exercise always helps shed excess water) drink tons of water, eat foods like asparagus, broccoli, watermelon, ect to act as a diuretic and keep your feet up when possible.
  • I'm sorry. That sounds miserable.
