Nails?

So I did some research and still don't know whether or not it is safe to get gel nails during pregnancy. I'm tired of naked nails and the plain polish look just isn't working for me. Lol help!

Re: Nails?

  • In my own research, it seems like it really depends on your definition of "safe". It won't make you go into labor early or cause your child to have horrible brain damage.

However, it does expose you (and potentially baby) to unnecessary carcinogens and just plain nasty chemicals.

It is really up to your own comfort level.

  • vinylux nail polish Is great! You can get it on amazon! So worth it and so easy.
  • Went with another pregnant teacher to get our toes done after school yesterday.  I think as long as it's well ventilated and you aren't working in the spa day after day, then it's fine.  I now have a lovely burnt orange colour on my toes.

I don't have long nails, always frightend of scratching the baby, and you will get shit under them at some point.

And she means for real actual shit. Not just slang for stuff. Hahahahahha

  • Gel polish is always a bitch to remove you have to soak them in professional strength acetone. Vinylux is awesome stuff, I've actually had problems taking it off it stays so well. You can do gel overlays if you want though there are no studies showing it to be bag that I've seen.
  • I think it's safe. When I'm pregnant my nails grow sooo fast that they are extremely thin and they tear easily and it's really painful so, it's my monthly treat to myself. My lady usues an all natural dip powder that sets up hard and a little thick, sort of like when you get a full set but much more natural and I just get gel or shellac polish on too and it lasts me a month without chipping and without my nails tearing. $40 a month but it's one afternoon a month I get to spoil myself a little so it's worth it for me.

Just had a flash back of DD explosive diapers.
There was just.....So much poop...poop every where.

I still get nails done. Just not as often because we are trying to save $$ and gel is more pricey the regular polish so I opt for that too.

  • I do gels, very infrequently, as my doctor said it's fine as long as the smell doesn't bother me. If the place isn't well ventilated, ask them to put a little nail drying fan by you, or go to a better ventilated salon. Tip: if you get a pedicure as well, you're more likely to be in a spa chair and away from people getting acrylics on their fingers, which is where the more intense fumes are.

Why just plan a wedding when you can plan a baby AND a wedding?
  • Shelac gel is amazing! I go to a salon that does not do acrylics or gel acrylics, so the ventilation is better. (If that's what your concerned about)

Shelac lasts like 3 weeks. I recomend it. And this is coming from someone who had acrylic gel nails for 6 years.
  • They are more expensive but the LCN nails are the best for you overall because they don't have any harmful chemicals in them. I've done my research and asked my doctor to make sure you don't have to get them removed for the day of the delivery. You might want to check with your because every doctors policy is different. The LCNs also make your nails stronger and allow them to "breathe". I get them filled in every 3-4 weeks and I use regular nail polish. I don't like the gel or shellac polish and its not good for your nails anyway. Sorry for the info. overload but I'm sort of OCD about my nails lol.
Married my best friend 7/2/11 - Furbaby born 7/9/11 and brought into our home 9/1/11

BFP#1:   2/2/13 ~ exact m/c date unknown but around 3/20 at 10 weeks ~ diagnosed with PMP ~ D&C on 4/5 ~ TTA for at least 1 year due to PMP ~ cleared to TTC 1/14

    BFP#2:   2/7/14 ~ m/c 2/20/14 ~ possibly due to chemical pregnancy ~ TG no D&C is needed

Surprise BFP#3:  4/4/14 ~ super duper extra happy (and nervous) about this one - EDD 12/9/14!!!

John Joseph was born on 12/12/14 at 7 lbs. 11 oz.  He is the most beautiful rainbow baby we could have wished for!

  • I get acrylic and dry them under a fan/ uv lamp combo for 5 mins and sometimes I eat lunch meat and also I get my hair highlighted.
I think as long as you aren't sniffing the gel polish out of the bottle it's fine.

  • I don't do manicures too often but I've been in the nail salon a few times while pregnant. My only safety concern is usually all the smells and fumes at the place I go to. I was waiting for a friend to finish and I was starting to feel nauseous and dizzy and had to walk out for some air.

I did the gels for a few months a few years ago and they absolutely destroyed my nails. I was bummed, cause they looked so good, but it wasn't worth the pain and damage for me.

This. I'm exclusively sticking to regular manis at home (and most times not even that because, ya know, effort).
