Birthday while pregnant; ideas for a birthday date with Husband

My birthday is Saturday, a few friends asked me to go out for dinner with them, they are very social drinkers and I'm not really in the mood or place to want to enjoy dinner with 3 others who are drinking. Also I haven't done a lot of eating out or dining out while pregnant. I get worried about what I eat and that it is handles and cooked properly.  Any ideas advice of types of food that are safe during pregnancy. Id like to have dinner with my husband, and I know that I definitely wont be going out for sushi, but what about Thai, or Korean?

  • I've had meals out numerous times (most of the time maybe?) throughout this pregnancy.  As long as the place is clean and the food is cooked well, I would say go for it.

I eat all foods while pregnant. Pick your favourite. Since you won't be drinking, go somewhere more expensive and enjoy the food. I personally love french food so I would go with that. And maybe a movie or a walk?

On my birthday last month, I went downtown my DH, had a nice brunch at a top reviewed place on Yelp, and did a bit of shopping and city wandering with him. I met a couple girlfriends for supper, at another favourite restaurant where they bought me dinner, and I had a small glass of sangria with them. My dh picked me up to take me for dessert and a walk around the seawall and gave me my gift which I had totally picked out myself while shopping earlier ;) Then we drove home! It was a pretty nice day!

and I eat out like 5 times a week. As long as you are going to reputable places, you are fine. If I'm not sure, I always walk by the kitchen and peer in before I get seated.... even when I'm not pregnant I do this. I just like to get a feel of the kitchen culture and make sure everything looks orderly and the people are clean/professional. 99 percent of the time it's fine, but I've totally walked out and gone elsewhere after seeing a couple gross looking kitchens.

  • I was 9 months for my 30th. Hubby booked a masseuse to come to the house. Amazing. He was going to have a chef come to the house too (DH cannot cook) but it was too expensive, so we went out for dinner. Like @Stargirlb‌ I eat all the things. I forget where we went, but I remember being fully satisfied. Throw in some sparkly shiny gifts and it was a good day.

It was a chic black epi leather louis vuitton cardholder. Truly the biggest waste of money ever because it's NOT EVEN MONOGRAM, but it's so sleek and sexy. I told DH that it was the thought that counted, and that him dropping 300 dollars on a tiny rectangle of black leather was totally symbolic of his undying love for me.
  • I've had all sorts of foods out this pregnancy including Thai (both in the US and Europe), Indian, Farm to Table and Mexican.  If it is a place I trust I don't worry.  You can even do a sushi place if you don't do the raw fish.  There are always a number of rolls with cooked fish and veggie rolls.  I would say think more about what works with your pregnancy appetite, I'm really into spicy now but not heavy european food, so I've been vetoing all the german places in Wisconsin.

  • Do nothing! Birthday's suck and shouldn't be celebrated. IMO

I try every year to enjoy mine, but it never fails that the kids are at their worst, very needy and whiny. I have to make my own cake if I want it. I didn't like the one DH made me years ago. I don't like flowers. I'm too picky for gifts and see it pointless for DH to "give" me money when I could just go spend it any other day. I did try to have a "me" time and spend the birthday money from my inlaws, but of course it was only spent on maternity clothes because that's what I actually needed. Too bad fb won't let me hide my birthday otherwise I would just skip it completely every year. That would be a great birthday present.

Anywho, back to the OP. I'm not paranoid about food safety at restaurants. I did get food poisoning when I was pregnant the last time. He turned out fine. If it's cooked and not sitting around like a buffet, you shouldn't have an issue. Buffets should be okay, but with viruses going around this time of year, you never know who may have touched or sneezed on the food before you touched it. If it helps, the food you buy at the grocery store isn't guaranteed to be any safer than a restaurant. :)
  • what I REALLY at the time wanted was a particular purse in black epi leather... but there were no price tags on it, (of course,) and I said to DH, "how much do you think this costs?" (testing the waters,) and he was like.... "2 grand I bet." and I could tell he could be convinced. I also thought he was probably right about the price because my existing bag was less than that and this new one was considerably nicer, but slightly smaller and more structured. (all black.) So Dh took it up and the sales guy told him it was over 5 grand. LOL. So I said  to dh, no no, that's crazy... you know what all I actually need is a place for my cards to put in my pocket for when I'm not carrying my purse (which is super often, I hardly ever wear a purse,) so we left. He actually drove to a different location to buy the cardholder for me though while I was at dinner, because he said he would have been way too embarrassed to buy the tiny cardholder for me from the same place after I clearly made a show in front of all the associates that I wanted the purse, and that they would have thought he was the worst boyfriend ever. HAHA
  • I eat out all the time, that shouldn't really be a concern as long as it is a reputable restaurant. I say pick a nice place that sounds good to you and enjoy an evening out. :)
  • Happy Birthday Saturday! Its my birthday too. We are just having a small family dinner. I agree with everyone else go out to a nice restaurant.

    @Stargirlb‌

I REALLY want the multi color insolite wallet, black with hot pink or purple interior.

I also want the delightful gm (which I don't think they make anymore.)

  • If I were you I would go to one of my favorite restaurants. I wouldn't worry about eating out while pregnant, I do it all the time(I think most people do).

I hope you have fun. Happy birthday! :)

  • Ditto what everyone else said about eating out. You can't live in a bubble just because you are pregnant. Just make sure to go to a reputable place.

  • It's my bday today... not doing anything special... taking the dog to obedience class but I will likely to dinner with DH tomorrow night.  As others have said so long as the restaurant is clean and reputable there isn't much to worry about.  I would pick something you enjoy and maybe caters to any specific cravings you might be having.

  • I have never even considered NOT going out to a restaurant because I'm pregnant.  My birthday is next weekend & I already have plans to go out Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  Of course go to a reputable place and don't eat anything that seems questionable (same rules apply to me as a non-pregnant person!)
  • @ KnitPixy Happy Belated Birthday!  I too usually don't celebrate my birthday, especially since having my son 9 years ago,  Everyone jokes and says I act like I'm 80 years old lol.

This year I feel differently and think I would enjoy doing something, since this will be the last birthday I have as a family of 3.

About the not dinning out or having take out much part is due to me getting food poisoning in the past. I have had food poisoning a total of 4 times with the last time being back in July (during this pregnancy) We ordered from an Italian place (ordered carbonara) I got so sick, couldn't hold a thing down not even water. I was sick for 3 days before I went to the hospital, where I was given fluids and nausea medication during an overnight stay. When I came home I was told to stick to the brat diet for 48 hours. (That was awful as well). Since then I've been more cautious in what and where I order. In Boston it's really hit or miss with restaurants.

Thank you all for your suggestions and advice. We decided we are going to go see a movie at a theater that just opened up near our home, have dinner at the cheese cake factory, since I've been craving cheese cake :) and possibly do some shopping for LO, and some bigger pants for me lol.

     Thanks again everyone!
