Testing for abnormalities

I have the test at wk13 to test for Down's syndrome, and other abnormalities...and after watching American horror story and seeing how they stuck a needle in her belly, surely that can't be right, can it?! (Freaking out a little). I've done my google research, and I think this is still done?

Re: Testing for abnormalities

  • I haven't seen that... but unless you're having an amnio, then no. The NT testing involves an u/s and bloodwork.

  • That's what I was thinking. They just called (because the test is at the hospital, not at the OB office) and said "calling to let you know your appointment is...'blah blah blah'" and didn't say the name of the test. Maybe I just need to call and ask. I didn't know if the "13wks" gave it away. Thank you though!

  • The newer tests are actually just done from a blood draw from mom, they test the fetal cells they find in your blood. It is more accurate and is zero risk.

That sounds so much better! I think I got more freaked out that I had to see it on American Horror Story! Thank you!

  • I think odds are pretty good that whatever Ryan Murphy has dreamed up for American Horror Story won't be much (or anything) like your experience. If that scene got you anxious, I'd be hesitant about watching the rest of the first season... It gets delightfully, creepily gory.
  • It's not an amnio (the one with the needle) that is done between 16-18 weeks. A CVS can be done at 13 weeks, but involves a catheter up through your vag, not a needle through the belly. I doubt they would schedule you for a CVS without a convo about it because it's diagnostic in nature, not a screening like the NT scan and comes with risks of infection and MC.

This is actually not accurate. Amnio and CVS are still routinely performed and are more accurate (99% vs 97% for harmony type test or 85% for NT). They are invasive and therefore have associated risks like infection or MC. Many women opt for the less invasive screeners, for good reason but these "old" tests are still used.

  • Wow thank you all for the input! I will definitely call the hospital to get the name of the exact test. That way I know what I'm walking into. It's all so much! So many tests, so many options!
@somewheresublime86‌ but it's so good! Lol! We keep catching episodes so we are now watching it from the beginning (but given my pregnancy, and season 1, it is a little creepy haha!)

  • @dmcox10‌ Just had Down syndrome done and it was a prick on my finger.
  • @rdaniels352‌ really?! I definitely need to call and get it sorted out! It all sounds better than a needle in the stomach (however after reading that it's still a possibility and some moms may need it done), I'd definitely do it, but cry the whole time

  • FWIW, since it seems you're all worked up about the procedure itself, maybe don't put your trust in a fictional, horror TV show to accurately portray a common medical procedure. In the unlikely chance that you need an amnio or CVS, chances are it's nothing like what you see on said fictional horror show that is MEANT to freak you out.

It was meant as a joke (referring to the horror show) and the hubsters and I had a chuckle about it. And the test actually is still done that way, I was just asking if a certain test was done at 13 weeks, since there are so many And I'm sure that's not the first option for those tests. I was just curious

  • They don't do the evasive needle thing anymore ! It was too risky , it actually caused more women to lose babies unnecessarily , or so my dr says
  • I love American horror story lol! I am getting my testing done next week. My doctor said it is a blood test they do by pricking your finger and a sonogram. You may be having yours done at a hospital because they have better sonogram equipment. I have to go to a office other than my doctor's office too. I think amnios are for further testing. Talk to the hospital and see what they say.
