UPDATE - Silly Question about asking for more medication from doc

I know this is a strange questions for SAHM board but you guys are my home board so I thought I'd ask.

My OB calls in prescriptions for me quite often.  I have a pretty bad sinus infection so I called him yesterday & asked for the usual, antibiotics & cough medicine. When I went to pick it up last night it was the tiniest bottle of cough meds I've ever seen much, much smaller than the bottle he called in for me last time which was in March.  The receipt said it was for 3 days of dosage (in March it was for like 8 days).  I know from my history with sinus infections that I will need cough meds to get any sleep through the weekend & most likely a few days after that, what he prescribed me will only get me through Saturday night according to the dosage.

Would you call him & ask him for more or just try and tough it out? If it weren't a Friday I'd wait it out but I'm afraid I'll get stuck over the weekend & not get any rest on Sunday night.  I HATE asking for medicine & for some reason it makes me feel like a child & that the "doc knows best".  TIA

  • Your OB calls in cough medicine for you?

  • @Dmartin726 Yes, he is in singular practice, said he likes to get to know his patients & told me from my 1st appt with him 8 years ago if I need any medicine to just let him know so that is what I've done.  He's been my sole prescription provider since I saw him on a regular basis when I was pregnant with DD.  I don't even have a regular general practitioner.

  • My OB has called stuff in for me too. I would do the same as CnAmom.

  • I would do the 3 days and if you're still coughing try OTC and then call back for more

  • I find it weird your dr is willing to call in meds, OB or not. That just isn't done here (Canada) - unless it's a refill of a daily med, of course.

Last sinus infection I had, my GP said they now believe the vast majority of them are viral anyway.

  • I don't think it's weird that it's your OB that's calling it in; what I think is weird is that he's calling in antibiotics and cough meds without seeing you first.

  • Is it the cough syrup with codine? Because just calling that stuff in is really irresponsible of your doc.

My OB's RN called me today to let me know that he was calling in an additional 5 days of cough medicine for me.  She had made a mistake on the total amount she was supposed to call in.

    Thank you for your responses.

It's a non-narcotic cough syrup (works much better than the OTC ones) & a Z Pack.  I have history of non-viral sinus infections documented with a now retired ENT that my OB has a long history with.  My OB is the one who said he was more than happy to write these types of scripts for me over the years.  He said it saves me trip to the doctor & keeps sick people out of his office.  He is a very well known, highly respected doctor in my area which I trust.  His RN is very new to his practice.

I asked my OB for the swine flu vaccine when it first came out and was hard to get when I was pregnant with DS1. She looked really confused and said insurance wouldn't approve a flu vaccine for an OBs office. Have you had sinus surgery before? I highly recommend it to anyone that gets frequent sinusitis. It was life changing.
That is so strange.  With both of my pregnancies (which fell during flu season), my OB's office administered the shot.

I am also on Team find a PCP.

Ugh! I found it strange they were like make sure you get it but we can't give it to you. I've changed OBs now so I wonder if things will be different with my new one.

My OB was adamant I get one, but I had to go to the health department for it. Does that vary by state? I'm in Georgia and my SIL's OB wouldn't/couldn't give the flu shot either.

I have died every day waiting for you. Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years. And all along I believed I would find you, time has brought your heart to me. I have loved you for a thousand years. I'll love you a thousand more.
  • @USM123 I did have the sinus surgery in 2006 or 2007.  It did help things but only for about a year then I was back to recurring sinus infections which sucks!

I love my OB, he's awesome & takes his time with all of his patients.  I never feel rushed when I see him.  It's a doctor patient relationship that I have been unable to find from a pcp.  He even conducts my annual physical during my annual pap smear appointment including all the blood tests that a general practitioner would run.  He doesn't administer the flu shot because he doesn't carry it so I get it from my pharmacy.  I guess if I needed maintenance meds for things such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol I might be in more of a rush to get a regular doctor but since (knock on wood) I'm pretty healthy & only get the occasional sinus infection I just haven't felt the need.

  • It really sounds like you need to get in with a new ENT, get fully cultured yet again (I'm with you here - I'm on a 20-day course this round, but every once in a while it's good to get a more current culture), and get this thing PROPERLY treated. It's not doing you any good to keep being miserable with this thing, nor seeing an OB for an ENT's job...
