OOP Meds donations needed

edited September 2014 in April 2015 Moms
I'm posting this on behalf of @OOPMedsProgram, as I know that some of the infertility treatment graduates here might have extras. It sounds like there's a real need for donations at this point. I'll tag our group, but perhaps there are others who might be able to donate, too. :)

Hello Ladies!

The OOP Meds Check in is designed to help those who have to pay out of pocket for IF treatment and medication connect with those of you who have left over, unopened and unused meds to donate. Every little bit counts, and every donation is greatly appreciated! Some examples of desired meds include:

  • Follistim/Gonal-F **High Need
  • Repronex/Menopur
  • Ganirelix **High need
  • Endometrin, Crinone and PIO
  • Ovidrel/HCG Triggers
  • Bravelle
  • Clomid
  • Vivelle/climara patches
  • Luveris
  • Lupron/Microdose lupron
  • Dexamethasone/Medrol *high need
  • Lovenox, Heparin
  • Del Estrogen
  • Saizen (HGH) *high need

If you have meds to donate, email me at: oopmeds@yahoo.com with:

  • IRL first, last and nestie name
  • Type of drugs and quantity available (units, vials, etc.)
  • Expiration date of drugs *very important*
  • The soonest date you are able to donate your meds

As soon as I have a match, I will email both of you to link you together, and from there you will exchange the appropriate information with your match. We truly appreciate any and all donations; every little bit makes a HUGE difference to those of us who are OOP!

*If you have any questions or comments concerning how this program is run PLEASE feel free to email me at oopmeds@yahoo.com. Your feedback in all forms is always much appreciated!*

**Please note, I match on Wednesday evenings and try to answer emails in between. If you have an urgent need PM my personal account (mm29)

*If you have meds, please do not let them go to waist. We have 9 women on the list waiting to be matched for medications. Every little bit helps.

**we have a cumulative need that exceeds >12,000 units of follistim and/or requested Gonal F being requested at this time, and Zero (0) Units available for donation. In addition to Gonal F/Follistim, we have a cumulative need nearing 2,500 units requested for Menopur as well. If you have any medication sitting around that you are not going to use, please consider donating to a fellow bumpie who is paying out or pocket. Every little bit counts!!

Thanks to all considering donation and a huge thank you to those who have donated.

  • I got some of my meds from the OOP program and it was a huge help.  It saved me about $3K (my initial meds were going to be 8K!)  I donated some meds now - sent them out in the mail today!  It's super easy and people are always willing to pay back any shipping costs.

    Me 33, DH 37 -- TTC since Jan'12 -- Low AMH (0.78) & endo, SA w/ low motility
    IUI's 1-3 = BFN, IVF converted to IUI 4/13 = BFN
    IVF 1.2: 8R 6M 4F -- 2 blastocysts frozen, FET 8/15 = BFP!!
    Beta #s = 445;1,098; 9,545  -- EDD 5/2 -- Team Pink!
    Camila Josephine arrived 4/30 :)
  • Thx @pblge -
I do have some meds I am thinking of donating.
I'm just so scared I'm going to need them again soon...
^^ This exactly.  Is it crazy to keep them in the fridge until the 2nd trimester?  I don't have much left, but I think I must have at least one un-opened vial of something.

@Seachele98 - I have definitely donated partial boxes in the past. Also partially used vials of things like Lupron. Just make sure you and your conscience know the meds were handled correctly. :)

  • @Grailseeker14 - I cleaned out my supply once I had frosties. I figured that the meds would expire before I was likely to be stimming again.

This is a tricky question. I have matched bumpies living in the U.S. with bumpies living in Canada. I think all the matches worked out, because I did not hear otherwise. That being said, it may take longer to match and there is always a risk of the meds getting held up in customs. If you would like to donate and feel comfortable shipping the meds to the States I am happy to find a match for you.
  • I have a ton of syringes and gauze left. I don't know if that helps at all but if it does just let me know!

January Siggy Challenge: When I am done breastfeeding...

  • Let me start by saying this: I totally understand the financial difficulty of IF, and I can absolutely empathize and understand how important this type of thing is. That being said, I'm curious exactly how this is facilitated. How do you know that these leftover medications are actually what is being prescribed by a doctor to the person you are sending the meds to? Is there some sort of verification process to this? While I totally respect the concept, I worry that this type of deal could get people in trouble. You're basically trading prescription medications between people and sometimes with money being exchanged (shipping costs etc).

Again, I am not criticizing. I'm simply intrigued.

It is true that we have to take the 'needers' word for having been prescribed for these meds as well as them being completely oop for ivf. Money is not exchanged. Most email prepaid shipping labels to those donating their medication.

Every state has its own rules regarding redistributing unused meds. In Florida for example you are able donate your unused meds for CANCER patients, there has not been any ruling on any other type of drugs.  There are actually websites where people are selling their unused meds, I have no idea how those people are getting around the legality of it. I believe why this program works so well is that although we do not know the other people on the bump personally it gives them some comfort receiving meds from people that they have followed on the board, or their blog and it feels good to give meds to those without insurance that have provided support to us through our journey. Also, no one has ever gotten sick from a match made through this program... just Pregnant :)

I have two jobs, so this is just something that I am doing to help others in my spare time. I do not get anything for being a coordinator, just the wonderful feeling of being able to help someone that is going through the same thing that I am. There is a science to making a match with in this program... MANY Things are taken into consideration when making a match - those cycling soonest & expiration date of meds, those that have already received meds vs those who haven't received any for this cycle etc... There really are many factors to making a match I just do my best to make it as fair as possible.

I am happy to place you on the list to donate.  However, people typically do not request syringes and gauze.  Email oopmeds if you want me to try to find you a match anyway.

  • I think it is awesome to donate your leftover meds.  I, like so many, am reluctant to donate anything until I'm "out of the woods", so likely by second trimester.  I usually take them back to my RE's office, they have their own "wait list" of sorts for ladies who are undergoing treatment and can use the help, so I'll likely just take them there, but I think it is great to coordinate for others who may not have this option.

@bluberries8, I had no idea you were still around!! How have you been? Congrats on your recentish BFP!! I do not ask people where they live, I just make the matches and everything else is worked out among themselves. However, in the past those living in Canada did let me know they were living abroad. I'm happy to ask those on the waiting list if any of them live in Canada, and if they do, I'm happy to let you know.

I will send you a PM if I have a potential match. Does that work for you?

I am an open book and I have nothing to hide ... feel free to ask me anything .... my first cycle I purchased all of my meds that were not donated to me through freegaragesale.com ... I was so blessed that I had a few friends who had leftover meds that they gave to me ... but now that I have used all of them ... well ... here I am :-)

I have HPN HMO insurance that only covers testing and 6 IUI's but nothing to do with IVF ... not even the meds ... and my RE office doesn't have any type of donation program for me to utilize ...
@Ready4one - Welcome to TB! As @snegde says, you might want to post an intro on the Infertility board here: https://forums.thebump.com/categories/trouble-ttc
This board is for women who are pregnant with babies due next April. For the OOP meds program, they prioritize women who have been posting on TB for a few months, but you could still shoot an email to the address listed above. Best of luck to you!!
