Cool but what the heck is "Ovulation method" for a fertility awareness method? I skimmed the article and didn't see it there, but skimming =/= reading, so I could have missed it.

And holy crap user error on a lot of those methods!

Was in the pill for 10 years with no fail. Went off it and got pregnant 6 weeks later. The pill was clearly doing its job!

i was on a monophasic pill for 8 years (not continuously...5.5 years before stopping to TTC DS, and 2.5 years before TTC this one). my usage was not perfect, but whenever i was late taking pills (which happened a handful of times, including a couple times that i actually forgot till pill time the next day), it was always in the middle of the pack, not at either end of the placebo week (which is most dangerous). so i guess, by their calculations, i had a 50% chance of getting pregnant in there? i can't speak to how true that is. it never happened, and i was off the pill for 7 cycles (4 trying) with DS, and 3 cycles (all trying) before getting pregnant with my loss, which was the cycle before getting pregnant with this one.

Infertility. World's cheapest (if not always reliable) birth control.

I was crap at taking birth control pills for years. Figured I got lucky or "close enough" was good enough (in that I skipped 1-2 days and then took the pills when I remembered... Frequently).

Until DH, I always also used condoms, so that isn't as big of an issue. But 5 years on a lousy birth control regimen with no other protection? Yeah, I would have had an "oopsie" if we were more fertile!

We won't prevent after this baby unless medically advised (like post c-section). Once we have another kid (either though luck or more fertility treatments), DH will get the snip. If for whatever reason we want to wait, I'll get an IUD for awhile.

Do people actually use a female condom? It seems so unusual, I've never met anyone that does.

I *think* it attaches to your cervix, and you roll it out to be outside of your vagina and covering your vulva, but I could be wrong. It seems like with intercourse it could get all shoved inside you.

Ok, so they work how I thought. I don't know why anyone would use them since they can get shoved inside during sex.

Technically so can a condom... I can't be the only one to have gone condom-fishing before ;-)

I like the idea of it, but I agree that I wonder how it's practical use works in real life.

Edited because I hated my own grammar - that's what I get for teaching SAT grammar!

I heard a friend of mine talking about using her diaphram a while back. I was so surprised that anyone my age even used that anymore!

It seems kind of like a mood killer. Unless you're planning to have sex in advance, stopping foreplay to insert it seems like a whomp whomp.

We've always been fans of the "pull out" method. I took the pill for two months years ago and I hated the way it made me feel and condoms make me itchy.

Mood killer because of putting it in and also because of how I imagine it feels. I remember the one we passed around in high school sex ed felt like there's no way you could feel anything with that in.

Possibly NFP (Natural Family Planning) or charting?

AFM, we'll be using BCPs after this pregnancy. While infertility is a great birth control, my PCOS can cause uterine lining issues. I'd rather not have to deal with a hyperplasia scare again. We'll do FETs when ready for a sibling and once we're done having kids DH will get snipped.

But NFP isn't just one method. Is it a mucus prediction method or cervix checks to indicate ovulation or temperature reading in hopes of catching ovulation? All by themselves are different, some methods use multiples of this, and some don't use any of them, but instead urine sticks to catch hormone surges to predict ovulation. "NFP" isn't a catch all and "ovulation method" doesn't mean anything.

I had the copper IUD inserted after DS was born, and it was in for about 2.5 years. Never had any problems, other than slightly heavier than normal menstrual cycles and more cramps than I had before. Oh, and ladies on the bump told me that it didn't hurt to have it put in.

LIES. ALL LIES.

Taking it out was a breeze, though.

I like the IUD, but I may go with the hormonal one (Mirena, I think?) next time around.

@LimaBeanMOM - DS was born on 5/23, and I had it inserted sometime in early July. I think it was a little more than six weeks after he was born.

I didn't have any bleeding in the beginning.

And don't get me wrong, (for me) inserting it was no walk in the park. It happens quick, but I had cramps for a few hours afterwards. I've heard other ladies say that they barely felt it, though! I only threw that out there so that other ladies might be aware that it sometimes can hurt a little. I'd recommend taking some ibuprofen or something before your visit just in case (that's probably against doctor's orders, but it's what I'd do).

In general, I liked the ease of the IUD. Once it was in there, I literally just could forget about it and it was still completely reliable (unlike BCP, which always made me very nervous in the past).
