Question for Hot Tea Lovers

For the past month, I have been avoiding hot teas, because it seems like all of my favorites "may not be safe" to drink while pregnant. I was especially upset about my kava tea (the main ingredient was the main offender in that one). I know to avoid green teas, since they inhibit folic acid absorption and a couple of others.

So I was wondering, what are your favorite teas that are safe to drink during pregnancy?

Also, I keep seeing sites referring to the controversy of red raspberry leaf (RRL) as an ingredient in teas made to drink during pregnancy; I know I drank the Yogi Pregnancy blend last pregnancy, and I am pretty sure that one has RRL in it. I know RRL is supposed to promote uterine health, and the tea was recommended to me by a doula. Does anyone know what was wrong with this ingredient?

 Thank you!

Re: Question for Hot Tea Lovers

  • Everything I've heard/read has said that RRLT is safe during pregnancy.  I'm also liking peppermint tea right now.

  • @welly336 This is from AmericanPregnancy.org and was what I was referring to about the RRL.

"Red Raspberry Leaf (Likely Safe) – Rich in iron, this herb has helped tone the uterus, increase milk production, decrease nausea, and ease labor pains.  Many of the Pregnancy Teas commonly contain red raspberry leaf to help promote uterine health during pregnancy. There is some controversy about whether this should be used throughout pregnancy or just in the second and third trimester, so many health care providers remain cautious and only recommend using it after the first trimester."

  • I drink a bunch of Harney and Sons teas (all black). To decrease the caffeine content you can steep one cup first (I use loose leaf) and dump it, and then re-steep using the same leaves.

I believe RRLT is suggested to drink in 3rd tri only because it can cause uterine contractions, but don't quote me on that one.
Yes, definitely not true.  The recommendation I've seen is 1 cup a day for each trimester.  (1 cup/day during 1st trimester, etc.)

  • @NariaDreaming I found a lot of reputable sources that said the same, although some also included 2nd tri as safe for RRL consumption.

  • I think I am going to try out some of the Earth Mama teas. They are all made to be specifically consumed during pregnancy, and there are 4 options. Three contain RRL; it is the very last  ingredient (least amount) for 2 of the those, and the other one is specifically made for third tri.

  • I drink Organic Yogi Mother To Be Tea daily. It has raspberry leaf, peppermint, nettle, spearmint, dandelion root, lemon fennel and cardamom. Raspberry and Nettle help tone the uterine muscles.
  • Anyone like Good Earth Original Sweet and Spicy? It's one of my favorites and comes in a decaf option. I haven't had a chance to talk to my doc about the safety of the ingredients yet but I will next week.

Rooibos, chicory root, natural flavor, rosehip, cinnamon, lemongrass, peppermint, chamomile, ginger root, anise seed, orange oil, orange peel.

I don't know.  That just seems so inconclusive to me.  The Traditional Medicinal tea labeled PREGNANCY tea has a warning on the back to consult your doctor before consuming and/or it may not be safe to consume during pregnancy.  I just think its to CYA.  I know many doulas and midwives recommend it throughout pregnancy.  To each their own. :)

  • OH. MY. GOODNESS. I had no idea that certain teas are bad during pregnancy and I LOVE tea! I have definitely had all sorts of teas recently. I feel like there is so much I don't know about being pregnant! I have some of the Yogi Mother to be tea that I guess I'll have to just stick to for now. :-(
  • I love traditional Medicinals pregnancy tea. It does have red raspberry leaf, but not much. My midwives serve it all the time.
I also like chamomile, peppermint, & Earl gray. Bengal Spice is another favorite.

Also for nausea, I boil ginger root & add honey. Mmm
  • Peppermint tea is so soothing!

  • Have any of you tried Teatulia's organic Lemongrass or know much about that brand? I foolishly didn't think much about some teas potentially being not safe. I had stash double bergamot yesterday :-S @ScarletBegonia79‌ why is Yerba mate bad? I haven't had it during pregnancy but I do like it.
