Do any STMs cosleep with first child?

If so... What are you thinking will be the sleeping arrangement with the new baby? We cosleep with our 3 year old and she has zero interest in going to her own room, which is fine. I'm thinking we'll put the new baby in a bassinet by our bed but concerned the night wakings will be disruptive for our older daughter. Just wondering what others cosleeping families are planning to do!

Re: Do any STMs cosleep with first child?

  • I doubt the baby will wake her (IMO), or if so if it is so much an issue.. My kids share a room cuz DS wanted the baby in there with him instead of her room and she has maybe woke him a handful of times and never to the point of getting up to have a complaint about it in the night, once she stops crying he goes back to sleep. He'll may tell me about it the next day like oh she was fussing last night but that's about it. No clue how he is gonna deal when this LO arrives and the two girls are sharing and he has his own room :-/ Overall lots of kids share rooms and since you DD doesn't have to "tend" to the baby after the initial times of waking b/c of the noise of the crying she may start to sleep right through it.

  • All of my kids slept with me from birth. My girls transitioned to their own bed without much fuss at 22ish months. My son slept with me until 22 months, right after he weaned. He slept in his own bed, but would still sleep with me on occasion here and there until just over 4. Heck, they've all slept with me on occasion past the age of three. No biggie.

I'll do the same again this time. It's just much easier for me to nurse and get sleep. I'll also keep a sleeper next to the bed this time.

  • Our 4 year old will still come sleep in our bed. I'm having twins but they are not coming in our room, they will be in theirs and if I need to I'll just shack up on my daughters trundle.
  • We did while they were babies and transitioned them out. The older one still sneaks into our bed many mornings though. He knows when there's a baby he'll have to stay in his own bed. We'll see how that goes haha.

Pretty much this.  DS co-slept with us until he was almost 1 for at least half the night (he would usually start off in his own bed which was in our room and then we'd put him in bed with us after the first night nursing).  Since then, he sleeps in his own bed but he still comes into our bed fairly often.

In preparation for the new baby, we've been trying to take him back to his room.  He has a twin size bed now, so we can lay with him if we have to.  He's a light sleeper so it will be a disaster to have him plus a newborn in our room.

  • DD co slept until age 3 every night the snuck in our bed 3-4 times a week til 4 1/2 (yes it was rough) we had a 1br house so it was difficult to keep her out of the bed plus DH works 3rd shift so it didn't affect us much. Now that we have our 5br house:) she sleeps in her room no problem. With this one we hope to have her in a bassinet by our bed and in our room until 6-7mo then in her nursery (next room over). At least that is the plan :)
  • Our 2 year old has slept with us since birth . We'll put a bassinet beside our bed and transfer baby to crib in the nursery after a few months. I have no idea how my daughter will do with the new baby fussing at night
  • Co sleep with almost 3 year old. She was just shy of 2 (22 1/2 months) when #5 was born. No issues with #4 waking up when #5 cried at night. #5 slept next to me in a co-sleeper.

Still trying to get #5 out of my bed (she is doing better but SO gives in). Although #5 still co sleeps and she will be 14 months old (almost to the day) when #6 is born. We will be back to the same situation. #5 sleeps in bed with us and #6 will be next to the bed in her co-sleeper.

  • My son sleeps in his pack and play but I would say about 3/7 nights a week we bring him into bed with us. We used to co-sleep full time when he was smaller. For the new baby, we are getting the arms reach co-sleeper and attaching it to the side of the bed.
