Prodromal labor is the pits... (Poor me post)

I started having contractions Tuesday evening at 6. They started about 20 min apart and ended up at 5-6 min apart lasting for an hour. They werent very painful but by Wednesday morning I called the OB office and they had me come in. I had dilated from a fingertip on Monday at my 36 week appt to 3 cm!
I had a NST done and baby was doing good, so my OB checked me about two hours later-no change. So he sent me home to try to get some sleep.
About 6:30 ctrxs were every 3 min lasting 1 1/2 min. I called the hospital and she basically brushed me off. Told me to drink 2 bottles of water, take a Tylenol and lay down for an hour. I was in a lot of pain by then and this aggravated me so much. (I had also had my bloody show but she brushed this off too). I did what she said for 45 min and they werent any better. Went in to the hospital and I was still a 3. So I got sent home again. I took some pain meds the OB prescribed and it help me sleep which I desperately needed.

So now, Im still having contractions, and pain (a lot of back pain) and Im completely grumpy. Im perfectly fine with letting her cook longer since Im only 36w3d today, but WHY do I have to have consistent painful contractions that arent doing anything? They need to go away if she isnt coming now.

Tl;dr
Having painful contractions consistently since Tuesday evening but it isnt real labor. It sucks, and now Im a grump. And confused about how to know when real labor starts.

  • Sucks! Thinking of you and hoping your pain subsides so you can cook the LO a bit longer!

Ugh! Prodromal labor really is the pits, and that sucks you're dealing with it. I had it for weeks with DD, and I can tell you there is an upside to look forward to if you have it much longer - when I was finally in active labor and went to the hospital, I was already at 5 cm. and I only labored at home for an hour before we got everything together and headed in! You'll have a lot less to go once it's the real deal. Hang in there!

That is what the nurse told me last night, that it should go fast once it is the real thing. But the part about you having it for weeks makes me want to cry! :((
  • It was off and on, if that makes you feel any better. Like, maybe only once or twice a week? I think it helped me tolerate active labor better too, once it started. I know it can be a total mindfuck, but it will just be a blip on your radar in no time!

  • I so sorry you are in pain. I hope you get some relief soon and for a speedy delivery when it is baby time.
  • I'm so sorry. That sounds rough.

Try not to think of these contractions as unproductive! They got you to 3cm already, right? They're prepping you perhaps for an easier L&D when the time comes. :)

    Hang in there!

ETA: I see @Duder pretty much said the same thing. Whoops! :P

  • This happened to me about 2 weeks ago. You are right it does suck! But they gave me medicine to stop mine. Hang in there you are almost ready and if you keep having them they will just make things easier in the long run.
  • I had them on Monday for a couple of hours every 4-6min and was about to go to l&d to get checked out, this is our 4th, and then they stopped. Last night I was having them off and on again but not as consistent as Monday...it's horribly uncomfortable!!! I don't have my dr appt until monday so I'm hoping i make it through the weekend! I'm also just 36 weeks :(

    Hope you feel better!!!!
  • Thanks everyone!

@crawford411 thanks for the tips about the heat wrap and medicine for sleeping. Constant contractions really wear you out plus not being able to sleep at night from them.
Sorry you have been having a rough time of it plus everything else this last trimester. If you can do it, I can do it :)
  • So sorry you are having so much pain - I hope it subsides soon and your Lo gets the opportunity to cook a bit longer. Try to hang in there.

  • @crawford411 and @raesofsunshine1 im sorry to here this girls...im sending prayers n positive thoughts ur way! but quick questions...mainly bc i think ive experienced this too....

how long has this been going on? is it more of a XX amount of hours a day or the ENTIRE day? and after talking to your drs and they say "oh well when its time itll go fast" mean that literally itll be a super fast process?

sorry ive never hear of prodromal labor before and just wanted to get the inside scoop.

this past sunday, monday and tuesday ive have similar symptons and my dr literally just brushed it off as dehydration (which i kinda find impossible being that i take pride in drinking atleast 8 bottles of water a day lol) but even today...its let up some..but ill still have that 1-2 hrs a day where its right back to back pains/serious BH and just being miserable.

  • Just stopping in to say that I really feel for you guys that are dealing with this.  It seems like the absolute suckiest and I hope that real labor kicks in for you as soon as baby is ready to safely get here.

I honestly dont know that much about it. For me it was different from BH because it got more painful and closer together and lasted for over 24 hours (and counting.) nothing they tell you to do to stop BH stops them.

Basically it feels like real labor contractions you just dont progress like you do with real contractions.

  • This is me!  I have been having contractions on and off since Labor Day!  Been checked several times and although they are real contractions, nothing is happening.  I have a repeat csection scheduled for October 3rd, so unless they get things moving or my water breaks I am stuck until then.  I feel for you and know that you are not alone.  It does make me very grumpy and thankfully some days are better than others!  Sorry to hear this about you but glad to know I am not the only one!
  • I'm so sorry you're going through this!  I know how much it sucks because I'm having prodromal labor too.  Ctx 3-4 minutes apart Monday night, but got sent home from the hospital because I never progressed past 2 cm and 80%.  A little bloody show on Tuesday, some more ctx but nothing too crazy.  I also feel like I'm happy to let baby bake for a little while but seriously if the next couple weeks are going to be like this, I'm going to lose my mind.  Rationally I know this happens to some women (more often STM+) but it is really hard to deal with.  I hope things settle down for you soon!

  • I had these for over a week with DS2.  They sucked!  I honestly didn't think productive contractions were much more uncomfortable.
