NWMR: Leggings. At What Age Do They Become "Inappropriate" To Wear As Pants?

We're having a discussion at work about leggings. (Because well it's Friday and everybody's bored and ready to go home). Anyway, the discussion is that on little girls, rougly between newborn-5, leggings are ok and even cute to wear as pants. However, once you hit the middle school age and above (no matter what your size is) they are unexceptable to wear with nothing to cover them. I'm curios to know what everybody else thinks? It's been awhile since I was in school and at the time we weren't even wearing leggings. Does the school dress codes now say that leggings are not allowed?

  • I agree that on little girls, 0-5yrs, it's cute. Any older than that and you should be wearing them with tunics, longer shirts etc. My school did not allow leggings, but it was a Catholic private school.

    Keep it classy.

  • I even put my 2 year old in tunics mostly with leggings. I just think it's cuter. But, little skinny butt can't keep regular jeans on, so she has to wear jeggings. I do put her in regular shirts with those, but on her, jeggings look like jeans look on normally sized kids. (Seriously, the child is so skinny, she's in 3T pjs to make them long enough but wears 12 or 18 month shorts. Buying pants for this child is going to suck.). So, I would say by the time the child goes from looking like a little kid to looking like a school kid is about the cut-off for me.

  • Well, you'd ladies would be surprised at the amount of grown women and teenagers that walk around the mall with them on as pants. It gives us all complete access to see the color of their underwear or the lack thereof. [-X [-X

  • I seriously have a hard time understanding how leggings are different than pants - for kids at least. I mean they seem to me like they're the same fabrics/styles as the pants we wore when we were kids in the 80s. (or me at least)

Leggings are tights without feet. They are meant to go UNDER stuff. Always under stuff. Except for babies and toddlers, because they're just cute in anything, so I'm cool with that.
This.  Tights are not pants.  But heavier form-fitted pants like yoga pants or running tights are fine.  I figure if the underwear (contour or color) doesn't show, they count as pants.
  • What are we defining as leggings?  Because this is damn cute...

Madewell chambray shirt, J. Crew leggings, Stella & Dot necklace, Ivanka Trump heels (similar), Rebecca Minkoff bag, J. Crew bracelet, Tory Burch sunglasses (similar)

  • My ass looks good in leggings.

But yes, leggings shouldn't be thin tight material worn with short shirts.

  • I have seen very work appropriate cotton skinny pants that can look like leggings but aren't.  They are thicker material, have a real waistband, and do not show "unsightly" contours. :)  I think skinny pants are fine, leggings not fine.
Those are the leggings I mean.  I am guessing people's definition of leggings vary thus the debate. We mean the same thing but call it different names.
  • Totally agree @PrivacyWanted‌

In fact, I needed out of the office so I wandered around BFC (only thing close) and scored some previously expensive fleece lined leggings. I found an amazing plum pair.
  • I am an apple shape with very thin long legs and it's hard for me to find pants that don't sag everywhere despite fitting my waist.  I wear leggings a lot because they are very flattering - BUT - I wear them with loose tunics/long sweaters that go to my upper or mid thigh much like the photo posted above.

    Fleece lined leggings?  WANT

    Oh, yes.

  • This is what comes up on Kohl's for leggings - and this is what DD has and wears like pants. I usually try to get her to wear a longer top with them but not always.  They are thicker than tights.

  • I am also in leggings as I am in my office with the door shut working on motions and listening to interviews. I only wear thick leggings (mine are from jcrew) with tunics/long shirts.

Also, I feel like with the plethora of skinny pants, i.e. the Pixie and Minnie pant from jcrew (and similar variations at other places), you should probably be wearing those pants for the legging look with a more pant-esque fabric.

I hope the link worked. I suck at this stuff.

I was just thinking about this today. Another pregnant co-worker of mine wore black leggings to work with a shirt & cardigan that did not cover her crotch/butt area. My work isn't going to say anything but I was like whoa! They just hug your girly bits and well, everyone can pretty much see your crevices.

Seems to be a popular trend. I get it if you are working out but for everyday work wear, no thanks.

She gets a pass as a pregnant woman.  You get to the point where nothing fits well or flattering.  I have a coworker whose belly is popping out from under her shirts.  She just can't help it at this point.

I'd like to agree but since I'm pregnant with twins and measuring ahead of her, I just can't.
