Breastfeeding

Would pumping help or make it worse?

Two nights ago my 4 week old son skipped a night feed and slept a 4.5 hours stretch.  Since then my right breast has been so full and he has not able to empty it in a feed.  I'm sure he's just getting all foremilk from that breast because it's still full and hard after.    Would it be in my benefit to pump the breast empty, or would that give my breast the wrong idea in that DS need more of milk?
Any thoughts, thanks!

  • Are you only having problems on the right side?  Being engorged sucks and it can be pretty painful.  You can hand express to get some relief.  Every time you pump, you're just signaling your body that milk is needed.  It takes a few days for the body to adjust and in the beginning, all your body is doing is adjusting to all of baby's changes.  Somewhere between 6-12 weeks, things really even out.  Hope it gets better soon!

  • Thank you guys, after last night DS has been draining that breast a little better!  It just seems to fill up very fast once he's done feeding.   No over production issues on the left!
