Two name questions - one is clicky!

First, how popular do you think the name Nolan is right now? It was #86 on the SSA list last year, and seems to be slowly going up over the past 10 years or so, but how much do you really hear it? I don't know any kids with that name, but maybe because I see it here a lot, I feel like it's really popular.

Next, which spelling of this other name do you prefer?

  • I don't think I know a single Nolan. I like both names.

  • I only know one and he's an adult. I don't think it's overly popular or trendy if that's your concern.

That's exactly my concern.  DH and I both really like the name, but I'm afraid it's going to be the next Aiden/Brayden/Jayden.  It sounds trendy to me, and I'm trying to figure out if that is in my head, or if it's really true.  No offense to anyone who has an Aiden, Brayden, Jayden or any other -den name, I'm just trying to avoid my kid needing to always use his last initial to identify himself growing up.

  • Nolan was on my list because Nola is my MIL's name and after surviving 5 strokes, we didn't know if she would make it to meet DS2.  I think it's a great, classic name.  It's not too common, but not so weird that someone thinks you made it up.
  • Nolan is the name of a character on the TV series Revenge, which might be why it's gaining in popularity. Check to see if it's popular in your state - it could be popular only in certain regions.

  • I know 3 kids named Nolan.

Also a year ago when many of my friends had kids around the same time they were named Nolan, Rolan, Olan, and Solan.
  • I only know one Nolan. DD1 is Emma, it was the #1 or 2 name for like 6 years. We've still only met one other Emma. If you like the name, just use it. Having other people with the same name as you isn't that big of a deal. In a Jennifer so I definitely know a lot of people that share my name.

Wow.  Yeah, I think it's the increasing popularity of the -an names that has me feeling like Nolan is trendy.  I also really love Ronan, but DH hates it.

  • I'm partial to Nolan because it's my maiden name. I really wanted to use it myself, but I work with someone named Nolan and every time someone calls him I answer, cause that's what I was called in HS, so I don't think it's a wise choice for me. But, I do know 3 people who have just named their sons Nolan and one Roland. I
  • I know 2 Nolans...One is 3 and the other is 5 or so. So not too overly popular IMO. My father is Reid and he is in his late 50s. All my life I never heard of anyone else having the spelling Reid. I have heard of or seen on tv (but never met) a few people with the Reed spelling in the last decade or so but it seems Reid had just recently popped up on the radar and is increasing in popularity. Of course I'm partial to the Reid spelling since it's my dad's name.
  • I live in the Midwest and Nolan has become super popular very recently. I know a lot of little Nolans. I still like it, but I do worry about it being the next big thing.

I have only seen the name Nolan on the bump. I don't know any in real life.

I agree with this... I feel like I see it here a decent amount, but I can't think of any that I know IRL.
