Tell me about your baby toys

So I realized today that DD has almost no toys, other than an activity mat and a couple of chew toys and rattles. I know she's going to need some toys over the coming months, but I have no clue where to start and what months she's going to be ready for them at. Everytime I look at the toy aisle I end up overwhelmed and leave with nothing. I would like to avoid our house looking like a toy store threw up in it, so I would like to keep it under control with just some staples that will entertain her and allow her to learn. Any suggestions for where to start?

  • So far DDs favorites are the Boppy bunny or skunk rattles, a Taggie elephant, and a music mobile.
I've heard when they get older a jumperoo is great. As far as other toys, stackers, books, blocks, and puzzles.

  • When DD was 0-6 months, she had very minimal toys. No particular reason, she had the mat as you were saying. I usually played lots of music for her and we read books together. Now that she's 13 months a toy store totally threw up in our house. I'm sure I would do the same thing with DS but now that we have all of DD's toys that's what he will be using. Try asking on the 0-3 month board too. GL!

  • @amlonica‌ She doesn't right now, but I'm trying to do some planning ahead to find some sale prices so I don't end up having to buy everything all at once when it's time. She just started getting really into the lighted/music things on her playmat (12 weeks) so it's probably time to start looking. I know she's going to need things before Christmas, so I can't hold off to get everything for her then.

  • I have a few toys but LO isn't too interested in them yet. I did recently invest in a chair that he can sit up in with attachable toys. He seems to like sitting up more often now and not so much reclining like in the bouncer, swing, etc.

  • When Ds1 was tiny the best toy we got him wasn't a toy at all, it was a mirror. We mounted it on the wall next to his floor mat. He loved to look at the other baby hitting the toys above his head and we would watch ourselves doing baby yoga in it.

Before he turned 1, books and the jumparoo and his sit and stand music table were big hits.

The toy store explosion is sort of inevitable. We temper it by having certain toys in each room -musical instruments, puzzles and Legos in the family room, trains and circus tent in the living room, play kitchen and art supplies in the kitchen, slide and cars and trucks in the playroom, and books everywhere. Keeping the bits and pieces in separate spaces and keeping them from getting jumbled together minimizes the explosion effect.

  • Mine in just about 10 weeks, and has also started enjoying sitting up more as @pjaimeal‌ mentioned. He's so heavy (15 pounds) that his bouncer seat just slumps back now instead of keeping him up like it uses to ... Maybe time for the bumbo (or similar)

Otherwise I'd say thing with different textures, LO really likes soft things, especially on his face

  • I'VE purchased a few plush vibration/jingle toys that attach to her carseat. She's starting to grab at things so I think she'll start to play with them more in the coming weeks. I actually held the toys up to her in the store the two that she followed and seemed interested in were the ones I bought.
  • DD is 11 weeks and just getting interested in toys. She loves watching the movement and lights on her playmat. She has batted at the toys a few times. I've been giving her some loveys and a little cotton dolly which she likes to chew on. She likes crinkly things. I think once she's able to really reach and grasp I'll start bringing out more toys. She has lots of small stuffed animals, activity blocks, rattles, noisey things with buttons.

  • We don't have much. A play mat, a hard rattle, some soft animal rattles, a squeaky book, a crunchy type book (which DS is not interested in the books yet), and the bumbo. He likes to look in the mirror and be outside, but few toys fascinate him right now.
  • DD is just short of 3 months and has a teddy bear, a cloth duck that rattles, a playmat with hanging stuff(one sings when you pull it - she likes that), a rattly sheep with a squeaker in it, a pink turtle with crinkly/rattly feet/mirror belly and a soft wrap around elephant for the car seat that has a hanging thing which jingles (about $5 in TJ Maxx and she thinks it's the greatest thing ever). I'm holding off on toys til Christmas because I know the fambly will go nuts buying her stuff. The only thing I'd definitely like to get is some kind of stackable toy.

She likes the car seat wrap and the playmat best, anything else is treated equally by being shoved in her mouth and drooled on, toy or not. She's also got a pillow pet for when she gets a bit bigger because her sister has one.
  • We have some infant toys (rattles, crinkly animals, soft books, etc) leftover from the boys, but so far DD's favorite toy is a crinkly doll someone gifted her. It's the Lamaze Emily and DD grins at it like crazy and reaches for the doll's "necklace" all the time.

  • I echo PP that DS's favorite toy is his crinkly monkey a friend gave him. He smiles and laughs at it all the time while I crinkle it for him. Coming in at a close second is a small elephant snuggly with the tiny blankie attached. He loves to get it close to his face with and chew on the trunk of the elephant. DS is 8 weeks.

We have a taggie monkey with a tiny blankie attached but he has no interest in that. He loves to watch the mobile rotate on his swing. We have not tried putting the toy bar on the bouncer and he has no play mat yet. I've been meaning to get a playmat for a week or so.
  • Let me plug one of our favorites from older DS who could never fit his thunder thighs into the Bumbo. This seat was far superior and my gigantic kid used it happily until he was like two. To sit and play, to eat snacks when older, etc.

  • I'd start with smaller things they can grasp and mouth on like soft rattles.  Lights and sounds are always popular with babies.  Don't overthink it.  As your baby grows and develops more skills, you'll get a good idea of what are age-appropriate toys.  They usually end up liking the box just as much as the toy anyway.  Or random things around your house like coasters, remotes, etc.  And then you wonder why you bought all these toys.

  • DD is almost 11 weeks and over the past few days has started grabbing and bringing things to her mouth. Mostly it's a blanket or clothing, but if you give her a small rattle, she will mouth that, too. Luckily, I kept all of DS's baby toys.

The O'Ball was by far, the favorite baby toy for my DD1 when she was 2-3 months old. It was the first toy that she could hold and interact with.

O'Ball and the play mat are life savers.

  • I just got LO Infantino Soft Blocks on Monday, and he seems to enjoy them.  He likes to stare at the patterns and likes when I make them crinkle.  He event kinda sorta grasps them, but just isn't sure what he's doing with them!
