Slowed growth...concerned

At my last ultrasound (32 weeks) 5 weeks ago baby was measuring in the 48th percentile. The few ultrasound before that she was measuring between the 40th and 50th. Today (37w2d) I went in and was told that she was measuring in the 12th percentile. This obviously really concerns me. My doctor told me to try not to worry as I am a small person, and she doesn't expect me to have a big baby. But I just can't get over the fact that that is a huge drop. To ease my worries, she said we can repeat the ultrasound in two weeks, but I don't even feel comfortable waiting that long. If she has stopped growing, isn't this something we want to figure out sooner rather than later? I left my doctor a message asking her to call me back so that I can ask about repeating the ultrasound next week, but do you all have any other advice for things I should ask/ discuss with my doctor? Has anyone had similar experiences?

Re: Slowed growth...concerned

  • My girl's growth started to diminish sometime between 24-28 weeks.

At 35 weeks my doctors made a decision to induce me at 37 weeks based on the size of my girl's adobmen being in the >1%.   I am also monitored 2x weekly to make sure that her cord blood flow, movement, and heart rate is good.

With that said I know my u/s have had inaccurate results one week she was in the 3% overall,  the next week in the 18th overall/5%abdomen and the last at 35 she was in the 13% overall/1%abdomen.

Based on my numbers,  there could be a placenta problem and increased risk of delivering a stillborn and so that it is better to induce early.  My numbers are a lot more drastic than yours.

I have trouble accepting this considering that she is growing, I am gaining wait, and a little annoyed they do not feel they need to do another growth scan and how inaccurate they are but I am ultimately relying on their judgment and being induced next Monday.

I would advise you to get a second opinion with a perinatologist or another OB/GYN as to whether you could be at risk as to a placenta problem or at higher risk for a stillborn if you are concerned.  But do keep in mind your results of the u/s can be incredibly inaccurate and if your doc doesn't think there is anything to worry about, I wouldn't be too concerned.

What you could also do at home (which my doctor suggested) is to make sure his/her movements are regular and do not decrease and check your blood pressure at the grocery store (small babies could indicate pre-eclamsia).

  • Personally, if my OB wasn't concerned that would put my mind at ease. Ultrasounds so late in pregnancy can be wildly inaccuate, so your LO could be in the 12th percentile but she could also still be around the 50th as she's been. There are so many stories on this board about OB's saying a baby will be so small or so big that they want to get the baby out sooner rather than later and then the baby's size turns out to be much different than the scan showed. There's nothing wrong with asking to move the scan up a week to ease your mind (I'm sure it's driving you crazy) But also ask your OB why they don't seem concerned and they should be able to explain their exact thought process and hopefully that will help you too.
