Toddler Clothing Sizes

Some new clothes are in order with this change in the weather. I'm a bit confused about clothing sizes though. Is there a difference between 24 month and 2T? Why doesn't Target carry 24 month? Will Target 2T pajamas fit DS if he has grown out of Carters 18month?

DD also needs new sleepers. She can wear 18 month sleepers right now but I worry that I'll buy a bunch and then she'll go through a growth spurt in a month and they won't fit anymore. Would Target 2T just be ridiculously huge on her?

I'm getting frustrated with clothes in general. Why does DS need 12 month pants but 24 month sleepers? What a crazy range of sizes! I stupidly bought some 24 month pants on clearance for hin last spring thinking he could wear them this winter, but it turns out that most 12 month pants from last spring either fit perfectly or are big still. Ugh.

Re: Toddler Clothing Sizes

  • My kid wears 18 month pants but wears 3t pjs lol they are a teeny bit big but 2t he's been wearing all summer and are snug and there's no in between. 24 month seem to be smaller than 2t in shirts in our experience. I've come to realize at this age it's trial and error

  • 2t is slightly bigger than 24 months. We are in between 18 and 24 month stuff. Some 18 month pants fit while some 24 month fits. Same with pjs. Some 18 months some 24 months. I think as pp said this age is trial and error!!!!

  • I could be making this up, but I always though 24 month pants were cut bigger than 2T to accomodate diaper butt better?

  • 24 month is usually a bit shorter than 2t. My little shrimp is barely in 18 months. But for pjs, I have been buying 2t. I know they are supposed to be snug, but anything smaller tends to ride up on his legs, and his big ole belly hangs out. I wouldn't worry about 2t being too big. For one things, sizes range so much. My dd fits in some 2t, mostly 3t, but has a lot of 4t and "smalls"

  • 24m I find a bit wider and shorter, 2t is longer and slim fitting. DS has been wearing 24m/2t since his first birthday just rolled up a little bit in the legs. At 18m he's about 33lbs and tall enough that we don't roll up the legs - we're more than got our moneys worth with the 2t clothes. We're starting to buy 3t for this winter but they're a tiny bit big still, 2t pj's fit a little bit nicer since he has little feet so the footies fit properly and aren't sliding around as much as in 3t.

Speaking of is it just me or do toddler jeans seem to fit tight? DD can fit into 2T and some 18month jeans but she can't climb in them and some of them she can't sit comfortably. I know some of it is her CD butt but even when I have her in disposables it doesn't help much. I just hemmed two pairs of 3T and one pair of 4T jeans for her to wear.

She only wears a diaper at night during the hot months but I'm about to buy her some jammies for the cold season. How big are your babes that are wearing 3T sleepers? DD is 33.25" tall and about 30lb I think I'll need to go with 3T right?

I assumed that 24 months is code for 18-24 months and 2t is what kids (roughly) wear around age two.
See, this is also what I thought. What's thrown me off is the fact that Target doesn't have 24 month clothes. I don't get that.

DS has never worn jeans because of this. How fun is running and climbing in skinny jeans? Not fun. So he's a sweatpants kind of guy.
This, I have yet to put a pair of jeans on either of my kids.  I honestly don't know how they would function in them

@SidraJedi, this is about how big my boy is and he has HUGE feet (we are in 7's). His 24 month old footie pj's don't work anymore because his feet are too big so we just moved up to the 3T. So far, it says that for weight he should be in 3T but for height he should be in 2T. I don't think it will take long to fill up the little extra space in the 3T.

Old Navy has some wide leg jeans :) DS has two pairs of jeans but very rarely wears them. He lives in comfy clothes (or lack of) - sweat pants, jammies, or naked.

  • DD has no problems in jeans. But she's tall and skinny. 18 months stats were 33.5 inches and 23.5lbs

Nope, not even online. Apparently our babies should be naked from 18-24 months. lol

So according to this, babies are crawlers who are still in diapers, and toddlers are walkers who are no longer in diapers. What about the long stage of walking but not yet potty trained (aka where we'll still be for probably the next 9-12 months!)?

Should I skip 24 month and just go straight to 2T for tops and jammies? For pants DS is still in 12 month! Seems funny to be buying 2T tops and 12 month pants.

I would do 2T pajamas. You will get more out of them in the long run. If they are a tad big it is OK since they are just pajamas ;)the shirts I would just go based on holding them up and seeing what you think.
The thing I'm worried about is that they're footed fleece pajamas. If they're too big, the kids will be swimming in them and tripping all over the place. I may just have to buy some and try them on the kids.

For a while we had to buy larger footie pjs because DD's feet were too big for her normal size, but then the rest of the pjs were huge and the footie ended up coming off her feet and she'd slip.  My ghetto solution?  Socks over the top of the footies when the pjs were a little big.  Yep, she was styling :)
  • We're into the 2t and a few 3t shirts over here...my girly has a wee bit of a gut that hangs out of 18 or 24 month shirts.
