car seat and neck support

You know how when you fall asleep your head falls forward or to the side and you get the inevitable neck pain?

Well ds does this in the car I have strap covers but they suck. I used the head huggers but they made him so hot (in what universe was minky a good idea) and he would fall forward anyway. I need something that will keep his head up. Like a travel pillow. But would he be okay wearing that all the time? Or something similar but not in his way when he is awake?

Thoughts suggestions product rec? Thank you :)

    Aftermarket items shouldn't be used with car seats. They haven't been crash tested with them and they can void your warranty should you be in an accident.

    Have you checked the angle of your seat?

    Yes. But I find the suggestion to angle the car seat with a towel or pool noodle a little hypocritical when saying no after market items.

    It's as far back as it can go without a towel or pool noodle. ETA our car is small so it can't go back further either.

    I never used anything with either kid. They never seemed to mind.

    we had the same problem for ages with the bucket, i finally gave in and put a towel under it and problem solved. Now we just switched to a convertible this weekend and even with the towel his head is back to falling forward. We're going to try a pool noodle next, the towel gets quite squished under there so I'm thinking the noodle will add just a little more recline

    We are in a convertible already :( we never used a bucket seat.

    I know it doesn't bug him, he will move his head, reposition and fall back asleep. I just think it looks totally uncomfortable and can't be good for them at this age still. Maybe I'm over thinking it. I just don't his airway blocked.

    we returned a convertible that had an adjustable headrest bc his head looked like it was being pushed forward, and the angle was already adjusted correctly.

    You can use rolled up receiving blankets or small towels in the seat to help provide support. My doctor recommended it and it was approved by the person who inspected our install. We don't need it anymore but this is what our setup looked like for a while:

     Edit: crap, I can't get the pic to upload. Basically, two large face cloths, rolled up and put vertically on each side of the seat, right along the sides and tucked in behind the infant insert flaps.

    That would work @spacepotatoes‌ up his side and head there.

    Or I might bring back the head hugger and buy smaller strap covers. Mine have a cushion on them to support the neck I guess. I need some for his stroller anyways as they didn't come with any.

    I don't think you are correctly understanding the no aftermarket items unless they are the same brand as your seat.

    They are just useless. I'll either leave it or somehow shimmy a towel under there but we have a small car so it's a tight fit til we turn him around.

    The fire department people used a pool noodle for our bucket seats in the back. Made a world of difference for the angle of the seat.

    Andplusalso. The physical therapist had us use receiving blankets to center DS1's head.

    It's not hypocritical.  The carseat companies have tested with the towel/noodle and the purpose of it is allow the seat to be installed at the correct angle.  If the carseat isn't installed correctly, then however many safety tests it passed are irrelevant because it passed those tests installed at the correct angle.

    Honestly your kid will be fine.  If you're really not liking it, switch to a convertible seat and that may help. 

    What Kimbus said, and also the "no aftermarket items" thing refers to items in the seat that come between baby and the seat. There shouldn't be anything like that. Pool noodles or towels that adjust the angle don't go in the seat.
