Tummy sleepers

So I know its bad to let babies sleep on their tummies and i don't let DS sleep on his tummy at night but sometimes during the day if he is near me while I am doing laundry or watching TV I'll let him where I can keep and eye on him. He LOVES sleeping on his tummy and sleeps hardest and longest this way for naps.
He is 5 weeks old and has great head movement so I worry less.

Just curious, anyone else out the have a tummy sleeper?

Re: Tummy sleepers

  • You know, I was just wondering this myself. I know it was brought up before, but I can't find the thread when I search.

Just today I set Amelia down for tummy time and she went to sleep. Since I was right there folding laundry, I left her. Holy balls, she slept that way for over an hour. I actually got to watch an entire episode of Haven uninterrupted!

I just couldn't do it at nights or for extended periods, but I would think it would be fine for short bits. Am I wrong?

  • My babe sleeps best at night when he's asleep on his tummy so he usually sleeps that way on top of me. He refuses to sleep flat. I've tried the swaddle and every other trick. I know it's "wrong" to sleep on tummy and even more wrong to sleep with baby, but it's what works for our family and I love the snuggles. Not until recently did families stop bed sharing and tummy sleeping with the "back to sleep" campaign and the risk for SIDS when you research it is so minimal.
  • DD is a tummy sleeper and has been since she was little. I don't worry about it. They used to put me down on my tummy and I lived. DS is still swaddled in the RNP so I don't know if he would like to tummy sleep.

  • DS has been a tummy sleeper since he was 3 weeks old. Just make sure there aren't any loose blankets/pillows etc and that he has decent head control (that he can move his head side to side and not get stuck face down) You have to do what you feel is right. I noticed ds sleeping better that way as well which is why I stuck with it. It's important they get that deep sleep :).
  • My DD also sleeps on her tummy during the day- sometimes for as long as 2.5 hrs at a time. She sleeps much deeper and wakes up way happier than when she sleeps on her back. I watch her and she also has great head control at 6 weeks so I worry less. Plus we have the angel monitor so if I put her in her crib to nap on her belly for a bit the alarm would sound if she stopped breathing. I don't let her sleep on her belly at night but otherwise I think it's fine! She gets all her gas bubbles out on her tummy better!
  • DD is not a tummy sleeper, but she is a side sleeper. She can't manage to get on her side in her mamaroo, but she does it in the bassinet and her crib. I let her be because I put her to sleep on her back and she puts herself on her side. Plus, I have an angelcare monitor, so I never worry when she is in her crib because the alarm would sound.
