Getting hind milk to baby

Hello I'm a FTM with A 6 week old. BF has been going so far so good.

I have noticed a few of DD BMs have been seedy and green. With some research DH and I found she could possibly not getting enought hind milk. Is this true? If so how do I make sure she's getting the hind milk? I never pull her off before she is done, she will unlatch or fall asleep. She dose choke sometimes while nursing, would that be fast let down?

I feel so lost and questioned so many things with breastfeeding her but she is gaining weight and She has the normal about of dirty diapers.

Thank you in advance :)

Re: Getting hind milk to baby

  • Honestly, I wouldn't worry about a few green poops. :).
I have also heard that the whole hind milk/ fore milk thing is not that big a deal. As long as she is gaining, I'm sure everything is fine.
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

  • As PP said, if she's gaining weight and doesn't seem uncomfortable, you don't really need to worry! Poop sometimes just does weird things. Srsly.

The choking while nursing though can be a sign of overactive letdown - I found with my boys, when they were little, I needed to unlatch them when letdown happened and then relatch once the flow slowed down. The OAL can contribute to too much foremilk/greenish poops, so if you want to try something, that may help. :)

  • I had an OAL when LO was really small too.  When he would cough, I would just hold a washcloth to me until things slowed down a bit before latching him back on.  I've also heard that the fore/hind milk thing isn't a big concern but I went from feeding LO from both sides to just one each feeding and that really helped for us.
  • Other posters are right and I think I was experiencing the same thing around the time my LO was 6 weeks. Your body will get it all balanced out eventually, but something that helped me was doing a block feeding schedule where I would only switch boobs every two hours.

For example, if LO ate at 9:30 and wanted to nurse again at 10:15 I would just put him back on the same boob again. This was my thing during growth spurts when he was eating every 45 min to help get him some hind milk.

kellymom.com is a great resource too if you don't already have it. That's where I read up on block feeding.
