Girl nursery (PIP)

Anyone have firm ideas about their little girl's nursery yet? I just can't decide. We're going to be moving in November, so I don't want to buy too much beforehand, and we're also going to be renting, so I can't paint the walls.

So far I'm thinking the colors teal, coral, and dark purple. I have a black chevron crib skirt from DS that I hope to reuse. I want to make her mobile out of different pieces of fabric and also do something behind her crib with different swatches of fabric inside the sewing circles. I'm envisioning a sort of eclectic quilt-y vibe, but just can't figure out how to tie it all together. Any suggestions?

I love this crib sheet: image

I'm thinking of doing something similar with the fabric in the embroidery hoops, and it sounds like a good portable option with you moving!  If you are using the black chevron crib skirt, it should be easy to find a piece of black chevron fabric for one of the hoops to connect the two.

  • I love those sheets!! We are doing the teals, corals and pink with a beachy theme with starfish and seahorses. I included a pic of the pottery barn bedding set we got. We are doing white furniture and the changing table someone gave us and we are painting it a bright pink to contrast. Here are some of my ideas:

  • If you are using a lot of different fabric and colours (love the colour palet by the by!) I would recommend using shape as a repeating theme to bring everything together.

For example if you have the chevron bed skirt and that sheet set maybe look at doing the fabric swatches in that scallop shape rather than a circle.  I would also keep the walls fairly light and be choosy with how many acessories you throw in.  Maybe a really pale coral colour on the walls, furniture all in a similar neutral colour (could be either light or dark) and then colour thrown in with your fabrics and accessories.

My random two cents.... good luck!  Decorating is hard!

  • @namcgee Thanks for the suggestion, I bet black chevron fabric would be really easy to find.

@texasmama786 I LOVE that crib set! We're also doing plain white furniture. I refinished a changing table for DS and plan on reusing it, just switching out the knobs. White furniture is just so versatile!

@KnitPixy This is probably a silly question, but how would one go about doing the fabric swatches in scallop shape? I like that idea, just don't know how to execute it.
  • @peckmiranda Not silly at all!  I posted my comment and had to thing about how I would do it after the fact :P

I'd be tempted to get foamcore board or plywood and cut it in to the shape you want  and then stretch the fabric over it and either staple (for the wood) or hot glue (for the foamcore) the fabric in place at the back.  Then just get a hook of some kind to attach to the back to hang it from.  Plywood would give you a stronger piece but of course is harder to cut.

  • @KnitPixy I will definitely be doing foam board. Of course, now I'm thinking about doing a quilt that repeats the scalloped edges. I doubt I'll get around to it though :p

@elleswarth Love it! Especially the birds. Are they a mobile?

Nope, they're just 3D ceramic birds I plan on putting around the tree. We got a mobile that has lights and plays music and all of that but I'm not putting it up till baby is here since I hate the way it looks! And thank you! :)
  • Ok so @elleswarth 's mobile inspired me. I want to do bird shapes instead of scallops covered in fabric. Would that be too busy? And a nice simple bird mobile, like this.

  • I was planning a bird/tree nursery if I had been expecting a girl!  I decided to do whales for this little guy.  I was really wanting to paint the walls a light blue either way because the room is really small and I wanted to try to make it seem larger.
  • @elleswarth‌ looove the monogram! Where did you get it?

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.

Thank you! Pottery Barn kids! It took 3 weeks to finally get here.
  • Oh my goodness does anyone else have the Houzz app? I love looking at random pictures of houses I'll never be able to afford, but on a whim I searched for "nursery" and good-bye morning! I'm getting so many ideas! Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to post the pictures in here. But look at this adorable nursery!
