Random thoughts on the random thread

I usually don't get on TB until evening, at which point the random thread is crazy ass long.  Sometimes I read it, but more often than not, I don't have it in me to slog through it.  Don't get me wrong -- it serves a purpose.  "I had a delicious sub sandwich!"  "I pooped!"  "DH and I finally had sex!" -- these are random-thread apporpriate, and likely not worthy of their own posts (except for the poor woman who hasn't pooped in 8 weeks -- that deserves it's own thread when that shit finally hits the proverbial fan).

I wish some people actually WOULD make separate posts for some of the things that end up in the random thread.  I feel like more often than not when I log on, there's a super long random thread, a handful of new posts, and then tons of old stuff I've alrady seen that got bumped up because someone commented again.  I'd love to offer congrats, support, or wisdom (if I have some to share) to the "meatier" stuff buried in the random post, but like I said, I usually don't even click on it because I don't have the energy to read it for 30 minutes.

Long story short -- I guess I just wish there were more posts and that the random thread was shorter (and truly just contained random stuff that I wouldn't care about skipping).  Just me?  Any thoughts?

(Guess everyone is busy posting in the random thread.  Ha!)

  • I think its essentially up to each person to decide if their post is "new thread" worthy. If I have something important I want to ask or share, I make a new thread and don't really care if others think its AWing or not. I too don't have a lot of time to keep up with the random as it is usually 6 pages long by the time I log in in the morning.

So I guess the bottom line is that it's up to each person to decide how they want to handle the random thread. Can't force change.

To be honest, I very rarely participate in it because I can't keep up with it :( I wish I did.

ETA: Also on the west coast, by the time I log on that thread is intimidatingly long. Some days I am afraid to even take a look!

I have thought exactly this almost every time I come to this board.

  • I'm a little intimidated to read it too. With the time change I have with most of you, it's busiest during the hours that I'm usually hanging out with FI when he gets home from work. But I pop in and out of and skim.
  • I agree. I rarely have time to read it all and I cant keep up with it. but I do love it, and all its randomness

I can't keep up with it either. Sometimes I've posted big updates (u/s pics) in there... too AW-y for me to start my own thread.

Eta - but I do like it-- it's a smaller group of people to keep up with. If it was just individual posts it would have taken me way longer to get to "know" people here.

It used to be a smaller group, last time I was in there I couldn't keep track of everyone!

The random thread and I have a love-hate relationship. I love the IDEA of the random thread, but I agree, I just never have more than a few minutes at a time during the day to catch up and read it all :(
When I finally get a few minutes, I start to read it, think of something to add, then have to put my phone down for like 2 hours. I come back, not remembering where I left off, or what I wanted to add, and get frustrated. But it is my main source of entertainment when I do have time to kill, for example, at a dr office :D

Eta- exhibit A. this reply took me 3.5 hours to finally finish and post.

  • OP I agree with what you're saying. I appreciate those who are active in the random thread saying it's okay to just pop in. I never comment because I feel like it won't matter and just be over looked since I'm not on often. I don't get on much because looking at the screen too long makes my nausea worse Hopefully entering second tri that will change and I can be more active.
