AW warning- ultrasound, septate/arcuate uterus

So we had our first trimester screening today for Down Syndrome (won't get those results for another week) but got some other good news. According to the doctor, it looks like my uterus is not completely septate as previously  believed. I was told before I had a uterus completely divided in half. Now it appears that the septum only appears in the top half of the uterus, with one open cavity on the bottom where baby is, and is possibly arcuate instead of septate. This is good for 2 reasons- 1) Although I'm not out of the woods, baby *should*have more room to grow and they say this may put me at less risk for premature birth/stillbirth/late miscarriage than was previously thought. In short, better chance of healthy baby 2) It makes this heart shape :)

PS-This post is not meant to be dismissive of a arcuate (heart shaped) uterus. Unfortunately for a lot of women, and possibly in the future for me, this can still pose a problem in terms of getting pregnant and/or carrying to term. I'm just clarifying for the benefit of any women out there with an arcuate uterus, especially any who may have experienced a loss, I sincerely apologize if this post came across as trivializing this problem. It certainly was not my intention. I am just trying to be as positive and optimistic as I can, since my risk (although still higher than normal) is potentially decreased after getting todays news, and hey, I'll take what I can get.

Me-24~~ DH-25~~Married 6/15/2013~~Pregnant with our first due April 2, 2015~ Septate/ Bicornuate/Arcuate /some kind of not-normal uterus- won't know for sure which one till after babe is born~~Hoping for a full term baby!

  • That's great news! I would caution that a diagnosis of any uterine abnormality, while pregnant, cannot be trusted 100%. I was misdiagnosed, twice, and finally had a proper diagnosis by an RE while I was not pregnant. He insisted that it's very common for regular OB's to not be able to properly distinguish the difference in a pregnant woman. Either way, it looks like you have great news to celebrate.

December 2009 - Diagnosed with bicornuate uterus.
  • You're definitely right about that! I had an MRI four years ago after they misdiagnosed me as a bicornuate ( I wasnt pregnant then) and they re-diagnosed me with septate, but they still couldn't quite tell how long the septum was/ whether it was complete. They told me it was complete to prepare me for the worst, but I found out after obtaining my records that the report was actually inconclusive. I am not sure why they are seeing it differently now, maybe because baby is across the bottom in the center so there can't be a septum there?
But yeah they were pretty vague. They gave me hope that it may look better than previously thought, but used lots of "maybes" and "hopefullys". So youre right that they cant be 100% sure, I guess because the HSG, the one test thats pretty good at diagnosing uterine anomalies, is not safe in pregnancy. But I'm trying to optimistic about it, only time will really tell!
