It is soft serve actually, because they don't clean the machines fully and they harbor listeria. I turned down carvel cake twice this week alone. Sadness.

ETA: regular hard ice cream is fine. Check out https://www.livestrong.com/article/134842-soft-serve-ice-cream-pregnancy/
  • I've never heard this. I eat soft serve often as I have a love-hate relationship with Orange Leaf.

We live about 2 minutes from Orange Leaf, and before this pregnancy we were there all the time. Now it almost repulses me. Who has this baby turned me into?!?

  • Actually, i have heard of this. Something about the bacteria from the machines when they aren't cleaned properly. This hasn't stopped me from eating ice cream. Also, my Dr. has never mentioned it either.

  • Yes it has to do with the machines not being cleaned properly, as previously mentioned. That being said, I now have a craving and will need to have some soft serve ice cream before the day is done.

since I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon that might cause ice cream friday to not happen (every friday me and the kids go to DQ when PJ gets home from after school daycare)... I should just go ahead and bump that up to today. This is happening.

I think if you are going to be concerned about this treat it like sushi, go to a place that is reputable with high standards.

You know a place like DQ is much more likely to have standards and procedures on cleaning and maintenance of machines  then a mom and pop diner.

or straight up ASK the person behind the counter " when was the last time this machine cleaned?" if they look at you with dead eyes..well you have your answer.

I'm channeling my inner highschooler to try to remember, but when I worked at DQ... an undisclosed big number of years ago... the employees who only worked days didn't even know that we took the machines apart and cleaned them or that the grease was cleaned out and replaced on a regular basis as well... then again, a good half of the people who worked there were morons (hence the reason I managed to be an assistant manager at freaking 17 years old...) in summer months it's a larger issue because the soft serve liquid is actually hooked up in a cooler, and if the condenser is clogged, EVERYTHING in the cooler besides the soft serve is at risk for contamination.

  • I could really go for some soft serve at the moment.
  • i eat a regular ice cream cone once a night and if i had a soft serve machine at my house i would probably have one of those a night too.

  • Um, my office was a block away from one of those frozen yogurt by the ounce  places.  I ate it all the time when I was pregnant with my second.

That being said with my first pregnancy I thought soft cheese meant all soft cheese (I missed the memo on pasteurized) and didn't eat cream cheese for 4-5 months until I realized that wasn't the case.
  • Personally, I am steering clear of soft serve because I'm an err-on-the-side-of-caution kind of person. I don't think it's bad if you do decide to keep eating soft serve but I definitely would say you shouldn't buy any from a carnival or any place where you aren't super confident that they have a proper cleaning system in place. A proper ice cream store or fast food restaurant is a pretty good bet that the machine is properly cleaned and I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

  • I'm with the other ladies, since the precaution is really the machines that may (or may not) be regularly & thoroughly cleaned, just stick with reputable shops.

I used to be a huge Wendy's frostie & mcd's soft serve type of gal, always pulling over for 1. Oddly, with this pregnancy, I have a strong aversion to my once comfort food cravings. Id be in a jam, and probably would take the risk, if I was craving the soft serves. I did order myself a small Pinkberry vanilla latte yogurt
Yup, soft serve Machine & caffeinated

  • True story.
A girl on my local fb nestie group got listeria while pregnant and her dr concluded it was from soft serve that she ate.
The baby actually had some pretty scary complications from it.
I agree that it is super rare...but possible.
  • She can suck it!! Someone give me my fro- yo!
  • I've never heard this. I eat soft serve often as I have a love-hate relationship with Orange Leaf.

Have you ever had Yagoot? It's my favorite, I go at least once a week.
