Sitting up?

When should i be expecting DD to sit up by herself? She loves standing but when we try to practice sitting she is all slouchy and won't even try to prop herself up with her hands. I know some A14 babys are already sitting, what is the 'normal' range for this?

PS I'm sorry if there was already a thread about this, I haven't had much time to bump lately.

  • Not totally for sure..but I want to say 6-7 months?

  • Yes as long as possible between sitting and crawling please! That I have where you can sit them on the floor with some toys is great.

  • I have a related question. Does the bumbo seat help them learn to sit up at all?

I used a bumbo seat with DD1 and didn't use one with DD2. I didn't see any difference in how soon they sit up on their own. The bumbo seat was more useful for baths and playtime.

  • Vin will be 6 months on the 30th- he doesn't seem interested in sitting up on his own at all. He isn't even attempting the tripod.

  • Almost 5.5 months and he is getting there but I'm thinking full unassisted will happen in a few weeks.

  • DS will be 6 months on Tuesday and I can sit him unassisted but have to watch him cause he will occasionally topple over. This is the one I have been waiting for the most as well!
  • Lol. I was looking at it and I wasn't sure. Then I wondered if the tray attached would prop her up but I realized it's probably not a good idea to sit my baby in something and rely on a detachable piece of plastic to support her body weight... I don't remember when the other two started sitting up but I do remember it took them a while to get to the point where they would use their hands to stop themselves from toppling over. It was a gradual process so I'm not too concerned with there being an exact point in which they meet this milestone.

  • DS sits on the floor with my Boppy pillow around him for occasional topples.
  • DS is sitting he started a couple of weeks ago. DD dint sit until 7 months and DS sat at 6 to the day. Every baby is so different.
  • By sit we mean we're putting them in a seated position right? Not getting there alone yet?

LO is 5 months and a couple days. She can sit up when placed but not always, and sometimes leans on her hands.

During bath time I lay her on her back to wash her and she tries so hard to sit straight up! But not there yet.
  • DS has been tripod sitting since 4 months and sitting unassisted shortly after. tummy time tummy time tummy time! We never used the bumbo

  • Eden has been sitting since about four months old but I've been told the average is more like six months. She tripod sat for a week or two before she didn't have to rely on her hands so much. She's been sitting unassisted for three weeks and she stays upright for a while. Usually until she gets over excited about something and topples. I still put a pillow behind her when she sits because of that.

  • LO can tripod sit, but his Physical Therapist said today that she doesn't think it's good for babies to be sitting up until they can get to that position themselves. Otherwise, their muscles aren't ready to hold them in that position, and it can lead to some back issues.

FWIW, she's also very against bumbos and exersaucers/jumpers for the same reason.

Not gonna lie, I was having fun seeing LO tripod sitting, but I guess I'll just need to wait for this milestone :)

My sister's an infant developmental therapist and she won't let us near the bumbo. Claims it doesn't allow them to develop the muscles to learn to sit up on their own.

  • DS didn't the hang of sitting unassisted until after he started crawling lol
  • Ds say up between 5-6 months, but that's kind if early I think. Dd is almost 5 months and can tripod sit but isn't ready for real sitting yet

  • DD went from sitting up for 2 seconds to full-blown sitting and playing at the same time. Happened from one day to the next. She is 5 months. She sat in the bumbo and Jumperoo at 3ish months but I have no idea if that helped speed things up.
  • DD is sitting unassisted. (She is crawling too). She tripods for the last week or so and is now sitting straight up. Slow down!!!!!
  • I think she loves the new view she gets while sitting
  • @mommyofmac aww, "hi" back  :-h. Between doctor appointments, physical therapy and helmet adjustments for LO, I've had a lot less time to hang out online. Hoping now that things are calmed down and getting routine, I can be participating more :)
