Another pumping ?

How much pumping(times per
day and oz) should I work up to if I want to build up a small stash. If I
can get 4 extra oz a day is that adequate? I have been hand pumping after most feedings since I currently have mastitis. I seriously can't be pumping after every feeding with the electric pump because first of all I don't have the hands to do with LO needing to be held when awake and also I will go
insane. What have other working moms done?

Edit: sorry for starting a new thread; i did not see the checkin

4 oz/day is definitely adequate. Like pp said you really only need what LO will be eating the next day. It's nice to have extra on hand in case of an emergency or if stuff spoils, etc. I went back to work last time with a stash of 35oz. Each day I pumped 15-20oz and that's what LO ate the next day at DCP

ETA: I know some people have built 1000oz+ stashes, which is great! But any time you dip into your stash so that you don't have to pump you are telling your body you don't need that much milk. If you plan to EBF for a certain length of time you have to factor that in

  • I am not confident with pumping yet. just wanted to have a little extra on hand in case I run into issues when I go back. It would make me feel more secure to have at least a few days supply. People from my own workplace have told me they pumped after every feeding which I thought sounded crazy.

  • I agree that 4 oz a day is more than enough. Last time I went back to work I probably had about 50 ounces total. When you pump at work you should be getting just about what LO needs for daycare. My reasons for having a stash are:
In case I will be gone for a few days. For example I have a work seminar planned in February and I will be gone for 2 1/2 days so I will need to leave milk. I will be pumping while I'm gone to keep up my supply, but I'll probably have to dump all the milk I pump while gone because the hotel freezers and traveling won't keep the milk cold enough for that long.

Also with DD2 I started pumping less and less once she hit 10 months old. It's not unusual for your body to stop responding well to the pump over time (why EP is so hard) even though there is still plenty of milk when baby nurses. I started heavily relying in my stash last time near the end (pumped at work until 1 yr, nursed until 14 months).

  • Are you able to bring breast milk on a plane? I plan to be gone for the weekend and pump while I am gone. Can I bring that milk back with me?

Yes you can. Print out the TSA rules to bring with you, but breastmilk is excluded from the liquids ban.
