I know to watch caffeine intake but I have gd and that one diet coke a day is a life savor. Just wondering if its too much because of the artificil sweeteners.
It's not the caffeine to worry about so much as it's better for a pregnant woman to have a real Coke than the crap they put in Diet Coke. I love my DC too but I've cut it out for now. I'm drinking green tea or sparkling water. Love my carbonated drinks!
One a day is fine. I really can't drink carbonated drinks at this point bc the bubbles kill me but I had an occasional DC when I wanted it. Real coke is way too sweet to me. Moderation !!

I drink it, and I have had more of it with each pregnancy! I feel guilty about it b/c I'm not sure about the sweeteners, but I keep it in moderation. My OB is a Diet Coke addict w/ 4 kids and says it's fine (her opinion).
My caffeinated drink of choice is coffee (not a big soda person). But if I feel like having a coke every now and then I do drink it on top of my coffee.
Full blown Dr. Pepper here. I usually have one a day. I am trying to cut it out, but I drank sodas like crazy when I was pregnant with DS and he turned out fine, smart and healthy. I also had my hair dyed last weekend. My OB said it was perfectly fine to dye my hair to cover the old lady gray at any time in my pregnancy, so I did... :-)
You should be ok as far as limiting caffeine, since sodas generally have much less caffeine than a cup of regular coffee. My OB doesn't have rules on artifical sweeteners, but I have friends who are doctors (GPs) who think everyone should avoid them. So check with your doc if you're concerned. I'm sure it's best to cut soda out completely but I myself can't do it, and I prefer the regular stuff! I just don't keep any sodas at home so I don't drink it every day.
Oh totally missed the Q about sweeteners. I'm a Splenda user. Tried Truvia since it's supposed to be more 'natural' but didn't like it. I used Splenda every day I was prego and BFing my first, no issued ever of any kind. Doing the same now.
I love the taste of diet coke. And try to have just one a day or every other day. But I have moved over to coke zero since I found out I have GD. Plan to talk to my new dr about it next week.

I haven't for any of my three children because of the aspertame. It's a cancer-causing agent in adults, so I wouldn't want to risk the effects on my little one. I agree with a previous poster; my recommendation: if you really want it, go for the non-diet drinks.
Sodas contain really bad stuff. I avoid them altogether personally, unless it's organic coke (there's one but I forgot the kind). If you need caffeine even coffee is better than coke, esp. diet coke.
cmrand4 I believe pregnant women are not supposed to drink green tea because it prevents the absorption of follic acid. That's what I was told at the pregnancy educational class.
I was totally off soda (real or fake sweeteners) prior to the pregnancy. I just had a cup of coffee each morning. The acidity of the coffee was too much for my stomach. With my first pregnancy, flat diet coke was all my stomach could handle. I went back to it with this one. As with anything, it's all about moderation. Even water is toxic if you have too much.
I just tried Coke Life and thought it was actually pretty good. Diet sodas usually gross me out but this one was actually enjoyable. It's not sugar free, it's sweetened with cane sugar and Stevia. So it tastes kind of halfway between MexiCoke and Diet Coke. I'll probably stick to drinking all-sugar Coke since I don't know much about Stevia and I only drink soda sporadically...
I am a coffee drinker and just limit myself to a cup per day. I drank a few regular cokes during my first tri b/c they sounded really good and helped a lot with my ms and the headaches that I was getting in the afternoon.
I'm an everything is fine in moderation person so I wouldn't feel guilty about drinking one per day if it is what you need to function/feel normal.
My OB said he'd rather I have the diet coke for fear of gestational diabetes later in the pregnancy. So, I might have one diet coke a week (only because I choose to have a daily coffee instead)
It's the aspertame (I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong) mostly and it's just awful for you in general. I'm a coke zero addict myself and I thought I'd have a very difficult time giving it up but actually just the taste of pop makes me feel sick. Occasionally, I've craved a fountain pop so I've had a diet coke from fast food places or out to dinner but I've been drinking much much less than I typically would. It's funny how your taste changes with pregnancy. Prior to my son (who is almost 6),, I was a total Mt. Dew addict. Ever since I got pregnant with him, I have never gone back. Can't even stand the taste of it.
I've been thinking about trying carbonated waters etc because I get really bored with just plain water.
I find that drinking regular coke tends to settle my stomach, though I'm sure I'm drinking more caffine than I should. I'm just glad not to be vomiting.
I stayed away from all soda, but am 26 weeks now and have had a few Diet Cokes in the last week. Hubby drinks them at home. I mostly did LaCroix waters. And coffee or tea for caffiene. I think stay away from artificial sweeteners if you can, but that doesnt help if you have GD... good luck.

I gave up artificial sugars about 4 months before I got pregnant, and I plan to stay off of them until I deliver.
I'm stuck with just pain water and fruit juice mixed with seltzer water for 6 more months!
I used Splenda every day I was prego and BFing my first, no issued ever of any kind.
Doing the same now.
