International travel in second trimester

Hi ladies - sorry if this is already been asked, I did a search but didn't see anything on the May 2015 board.  H and I have been talking about taking a "babymoon" in mid-January.  I started out looking at FL and CA but then we realized that we can get crazy cheap flights to the Caribbean on Southwest.  Our top contenders would probably be the Bahamas or Aruba.  I will be 24-25 weeks at the time we're looking at.  Obviously I'd talk to my doctor first and I'd research local hospitals before going.  Would you go for it?  Any particular suggestions or words of advice?

Re: International travel in second trimester

  • I'm due May 20 and was told by my NP at the OBGYN office that I can go on my previously schedule trip to Aruba in January. She said I just need to bring my records with me :)
  • Loading the player...
  • I would say as long as you don't have any major concerns up to that point go for it!  We are trying to plan a trip to Vegas in mid January
  • From what I've heard, as long as your doctor is okay with it, you're in the clear to fly during your second trimester.  Double check with whatever airline you're using though- some airlines, especially international ones, may have certain rules about traveling while pregnant.

DH and I are trying to figure out when and where to take our babymoon, because of our move this year we didn't get to take our annual vacation and I'm jonesing hard for one.

  • My midwife told me air travel is most likely fine up 36 weeks, but always travel with your records just in case! I'd go for it.

  • I'm glad so many are in favor ;)

Now the real question is.....Bahamas vs. Aruba??!?!?!?!!  Jamaica and certain cities in Mexico are also pretty cheap but I'm guessing the hospitals in those countries may not be the best.  Or maybe I'm delusional and they're not great in the Bahamas or Aruba either?

  • OOOOOHHHHH THIS IS TURNING INTO A TRAVEL THREAD!!! *ahem* Sorry- I just got really excited...

@abbalish - I guess you should look at what you want to do and what each island offers. Check out Groupon Getaways and see if there are any deals to either of those islands.

  • Good point, @NariaDreaming. Do you happen to know how common it is to go into premature labor without any warning signs? I'm assuming your friend had been having a healthy pregnancy up until that point and was totally cleared to travel.

  • I heart this thread so damn much.

What sort of continental US places would be awesome to visit between January-March? Let's discuss!

  • My dh bought a trip to Costa Rica the other day at a charity auction. We wouldn't be able to go until January or February but I'm really nervous about going.

I had been looking at a bunch of beaches in Florida - but hotels were expensive and didn't look all that great.  I also looked at Los Angeles and San Diego but I feel like those could be overwhelming for a 3-4 day trip.  There's always New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston, etc....or Sedona, Phoenix, Albuquerque (depending what side of the country you're on).

Honestly though, if I'm getting ready for life to change immeasurably after birthing a human, I want to lie on my fat pregnant ass on the beach.  And maybe eat some room service.  The Caribbean just seems more my speed.

  • What about Hawaii? It's not on the continent and things might be a little more expensive, but it's still in the US and I'm sure they have great hospitals there.

https://www.groupon.com/occasion/ga-beach-getaways - has national and international beach getaways.

ETA: just double check the "travel by" dates since some need to be purchased, booked, and traveled by certain dates. The closer you look to January, the cheaper the deals might be since it's not high travel season.

  • I'd LOVE to go to Hawaii but it's further away than I'd like to go, way more than I'd like to spend, and we'd need to go for way longer to make it worth it.  From what I was looking at for the Bahamas, we could get free flights and hotel would be like $1000 for 4 nights.  And the flights, while not direct, were only 4-5 hours total, which is great.  I feel like I'm not going to be able to beat that!

  • That's very true - you should go with that then, but maybe heed @NariaDreaming's advice and look into hospitals nearby on the island. With a huge tourist presence I'm sure they're pretty good hospitals, but look into their NICU set up. And definitely invest on that travel insurance and double check with your own insurance.

You'll have such an awesome time! The weather's still supposed to be pretty good, even in January right? Enjoy those virgin pina colada's!
